ENDESA (NYSE:ELE) is participating in the II Spanish-Chinese
Business Summit in Beijing taking place today. The event, part of a
series of activities promoting Spain in China, coincides with the visit
of the King and Queen of Spain. Its main objective is to show the
extensive international experience of Spanish companies and to showcase
Spain as a possible technological and industrial partner in future
development of the Chinese economy.
This second business summit between the two countries was organised by
the CEOE, the Spanish employers' organisation, in collaboration with the
Foreign Trade Institute and the Council of Chambers of Commerce, in
close co-ordination with the Chinese Council for the Promotion of
International Trade and other official and business organisations.
ENDESA in China
China is a vital platform for identifying and supporting CDM projects to
reduce emissions as part of ENDESA's off-setting strategy. In this
regard, in September ENDESA concluded the purchase from Chinese
companies Huaneng and Jiuquan Sanyuan Hydro Power of 100% of their
certified reductions in greenhouse gases from three wind farms and a
hydro plant in China in 2006 – 2012, which
could reach a total of 2.7 million tonnes of CO2.
The agreement covers CDM projects at three wind farms (Changdao, Qidong
and Weihai) belonging to the Huaneng company and which have a combined
capacity of 188 MW and one at the Gansu hydro plant which is owned by
Jiuquan Sanyuan Hydro Power Development and has 26.55 MW capacity.
The reductions obtained from these projects are measured by UN
accredited entities and can be used to meet ENDESA’s
greenhouse gas reduction targets as established in the Kyoto Treaty.
“Endesa Climate Initiative”
This operation reinforces ENDESA’s position as
one of the leading private carbon credit purchasers via the Endesa
Climate Initiative, a pioneering initiative for purchasing carbon
credits. In 2006, ENDESA signed agreements and letters of intent for CDM
projects representing 108 million tonnes of CO2.
Endesa Climate Initiative is ENDESA Group’s
B2B initiative to promote and purchase reductions in greenhouse gas
emissions by means of mechanisms established under the Kyoto Treaty.
Through this programme the Company is also committed to creating
additional value for companies which generate emissions reductions
through a flexible and swift approach, consultancy and cooperation, as
well as through attractive conditions for each of the contracts.
ENDESA considers sustainable development as a growth opportunity
maintaining commitment to: its social responsibility to the communities
in which it operates, efficient use of resources, its responsibility to
protect the environment and create wealth for investors, employees and
clients. Spanish facilities owned by ENDESA reduced CO2 emissions by
27.9% between 1990 and 2006. Endesa's CO2 emissions in 2007 will be 35%
lower than levels in 1990.
