Dana Corporation Introduces its First Active Electronic Torque-Coupling Differential DETROIT, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Dana Corporation today introduced an electronic torque-coupling differential that offers significant enhancements in the mobility of all-wheel-drive vehicles. The differential was introduced at the 2004 SAE World Congress in Detroit, Mich. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19990903/DANA ) This new differential is an electronically controlled all-wheel-drive solution designed to improve vehicle performance. Specifically, the electronic differential controls power to the wheels while the torque coupling transfers torque from front to rear or rear to front, depending on the vehicle configuration and driving conditions. This approach offers a single-package design by integrating the coupling within the differential. "Uneven road surfaces can cause the front or rear wheels on a vehicle to spin," said Chuck Heine, president of technology development for the company. "On an all-wheel-drive vehicle, Dana's new electronic-differential torque- management system automatically delivers power to the axle with the most traction." In addition to enhancing vehicle mobility, Dana engineers designed the coupling to be smallerand as much as 25-percent lighter than other available products. Also, because the coupling rotates at the differential case speed, vibration levels are significantly lower than most current systems, which run at the faster driveshaft input speed. "Dana has a strong heritage of being innovators in this industry," said Michael J. Burns, Dana CEO and president. "This new differential is the first in a family of active AWD products that Dana will be introducing to improve the ride and handling of all-wheel-drive vehicles, as the demand for this type of vehicle around the world grows. The technology behind this product demonstrates our ongoing commitment to advancing the science of mobility in the automotive marketplace." Dana Corporation is a global leader in the design, engineering, and manufacture of value-added products and systems for automotive, commercial, and off-highway vehicles. Delivering on a century of innovation, the company's continuing operations employ approximately 45,000 people worldwide dedicated to advancing the science of mobility. Founded in 1904 and based in Toledo, Ohio, Dana operates technology, manufacturing, and customer-service facilities in 30 countries. Sales from continuing operations totaled $7.9 billion in 2003.
