International stocks that trade in New York closed mixed Friday, with the Bank of New York index of American depositary receipts flat at 151.3. The European index edged up 0.3% to 152.47, the Asian index fell 0.4% to 143.90, the Latin American index dropped 1% to 258.25 and the emerging-markets index decreased 0.8% to 264.30. Among the companies with shares that actively traded was Pearson PLC (PSO, PSON.LN).
U.K.-based publisher Pearson, halfway through a restructuring plan, issued a profit warning Friday amid continuing weakness in its core U.S. education business. Shares fell 6.5% to $17.08.
China Eastern Airlines Corp. (CEA, 0670.HK) has agreed to buy 70 Airbus A320neo aircraft with a list price of $6.37 billion, as it seeks to boost capacity. The aircraft will be delivered to the Shanghai-based airline from 2018 to 2020 and will be used to service short and medium routes, state-run China Eastern said Friday. Shares fell 1.2% to $18.03.
Insurance firm Aviva PLC (AV, AV.LN) said Friday it has appointed Tom Stoddard chief financial officer, replacing Pat Regan who announced his plans to leave in January. Aviva, which sells a range of insurance with around 34 million customers world-wide, said Mr. Stoddard will become CFO from May 5. He is currently senior managing director, head of global financial institutions advisory at Blackstone, the global investment and advisory firm. Aviva shares rose 1% to $15.91.
