MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets, as expected, have been roiled by the acts of terrorism and just two of the 15 markets that we track are currently positive (they were closed for trade before the news broke). The cumulative average return on the group stands at a minus 0.400 percent. Plenty of action on the economic front today. The market gets to respond to a sound earnings report out of Hewlett-Packard. Before the market open, Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending November 15 are expected to have risen by 4,000 on the heels of a lower than expected 13,000 jump in the prior week. At 9:10 a.m., Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan addresses the Cato Institute's "The Future of the Euro" conference in Washington. At 10:00 a.m., the October Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) improved to plus 0.20 in September over August's reading of minus 0.40. The CFNAI is a broad reaching compendium of 85 different economic indicators grouped into five major categories. Readings below zero indicate an economy growing below its long-term trend rate, with a diminished threat of rising inflationary pressures ahead. If the index is above zero, it indicates an economy expanding above trend with the potential for inflation to build. Sharing the same time slot, October Leading Economic Indicators are seen at plus 0.2 percent improving over September's 0.2 percent decline. The Conference Board said its index of leading indicators fell 0.2 percent in September to 113.0, following a 0.4 percent increase in August to a reading of 113.2. The index was equal to 100 in 1996. In last month's report, six of the 10 indicators that make up the main index contracted, but positive contributions were made by average weekly manufacturing hours, stock prices, and new orders for consumer goods and non-defense capital goods. At noon, the November Philadelphia Fed Business Index is seen at 25.0 versus 28.0 in October. Terrorism raised its ugly head in Turkey once again this morning. The cannibalistic acts took more lives, injured many, destroyed property and dropped futures. Whether these events will weigh on the market for the entire session or even the days ahead is yet to be seen, but the ongoing threat of such acts will certainly offer a directive going forward. One would expect oil, gold and treasuries to rise, while equities and select currencies decline. Be prepared for the investing week ahead with Bernie Schaeffer's FREE Monday Morning Outlook.
