MARKET OVERVIEW
Overseas markets seem to be suffering from oil shock as just one of the 15
markets that we track has managed positive. The cumulative average return on
the group stands at a negative 0.423 percent. Positive news out of Japan has
failed to overcome the potential of rising oil prices on that nation.
Production of crude steel rose 3.1 percent in July from a year earlier to 9.55
million tons. That figure also constitutes a 1.4 percent on-month increase.
Economic activity rose 0.6 percent on month in June and 1.8 percent on quarter
in the April-June period. The data suggest the economy is still growing, with
industrial activity easily outstripping the surprisingly weak 0.4 percent
on-quarter rise in gross domestic product announced last week. The index, a
supply-side measure of the economy, was better than the average forecast
calling for activity to be flat on month. The Nikkei exited this week higher
by 1.23 percent and currently stands higher by 1.99 percent year- to-date.
Traders today will be guided neither by economic data nor scheduled earnings
events, as those calendars resemble old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. Certainly
appears as if OIL will guide today's markets, possibly setting up a slippery
path along that particular area of concerns for the market and the economy.
Today is options expiration for the August series and could present some
interesting trading reactions in highly optioned, lightly traded issues.
Needless to say, if you are involved in an August option position, make sure
that you deal with it in an appropriate fashion as they go away forever after
today's market close.

DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
The world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, Motorola, said this week
it expects a strong finish to 2004 as it prepares to launch 20 new phone models
with fresh, innovative features. If successful, it should help the company
extend what has been a solid year so far. Second quarter sales surged 41% as it
continued to grab market share from No. 1 manufacturer Nokia. The mobile phone
sector is still red-hot. Sales are expected to hit 600 million this year from
520 million in 2003. Camera phones are expected to account for one-third of
that. And by 2007, mobile users will climb to two billion - 300 million of whom
will come from the rapidly growing Asia-Pacific region. Look out for an intense
market share battle to rage here. Elsewhere in Asia, and somewhat lost among
the news of conflict in Iraq, surging oil prices, Google's long-awaited IPO and
the presidential election race, are fears that avian bird flu is beginning to
resurface again. The news isn't all bad, however. Ian Cooper, chief trading
director at the Taipan Group's Extreme Volatility Speculator investment
service, alerted his investors to Chiron on Tuesday this week. The company was
just awarded a contract to develop a vaccine against the H9N2 strain of the
bird flu. After taking a while to filter down, investors finally bought into
the good news and have sent the stock on a good run. Intending Chiron to be a
short-term play, Cooper bought October Calls on the company and is up around
30% so far.
The Extreme Volatility Speculator has prepared an investor's briefing report.
