Amsterdam, the Netherlands - Ahold today announced the appointment of Jan van Dam as President and CEO of Albert/Hypernova, Ahold's supermarket business in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with effect from August 10, 2009.
Van Dam, currently General Manager of Etos, Ahold's drugstore business in the Netherlands, will succeed Johan Boeijenga. Boeijenga, who joined Ahold in 1988, has held a number of key management positions in the company. Since 2006, he has managed the restructuring and rebranding of Albert/Hypernova. He has decided to leave the company to pursue a career outside Ahold, back in the Netherlands.
Van Dam, 37, joined Albert Heijn in 1996 as a management trainee. He has held a number of key positions within the supermarket organization of Albert Heijn, as well as General Manager of Gall & Gall, Ahold's liquor store subsidiary in the Netherlands. Under Van Dam's leadership, Etos has achieved significant growth. It opened its 500th store last year and has been named the best drugstore in the Netherlands by consumers in both 2008 and 2009.
Van Dam will be succeeded at Etos by Jan Willem Koch (42), currently Unit Manager Perishables at Albert Heijn. Before joining the company in 2007, Koch worked in a range of brand and marketing roles in the international branded consumer goods industry, including Sara Lee/Douwe Egberts and Unilever.
