Proxim Wireless Corporation, a global provider of
broadband wireless equipment and wholly owned subsidiary of Terabeam
Wireless (Nasdaq: YDIW), today announced that it has supplied the
United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) with mission-critical
communications infrastructure to provide emergency relief in
disaster-stricken countries including Afghanistan, Iraq and the Sudan.
Over 100 Proxim Wireless access points and backhaul links have been
sold by Proxim's regional distributor NexTech and installed by WFP's
technical intervention teams.
WFP is the largest humanitarian organization in the world,
annually delivering 5.5 million tons of food aid to an average of 113
million people in need, in over 80 countries. WFP often encounters a
total lack of road and communication infrastructure. For instance,
Afghanistan, Iraq and the Sudan had no means of voice and data
communications delivery in areas where the WFP's assistance was most
required. NexTech provided equipment, installed by WFP's technical
teams, to establish broadband wireless networks using satellite
services for the backbone, Proxim QuickBridge links for terrestrial
backhaul and Proxim AP-700's and AP-4000's for local access. These
networks may only be needed for six months or less, but the
infrastructure can be moved and redeployed as needed.
These communications networks have multiple benefits:
-- allow WFP employees access to e-mail and the Internet.
-- enable communications to efficiently and effectively
coordinate as many as 6,000 trucks for food delivery on the
road at the same time.
-- enable real-time sharing of information with implementing
partners in or en route to areas served by the WFP.
"Proxim's products were chosen over those of major competitors due
to the ease of implementation, competitive prices, reliability in the
field, availability of stock within the region, and the availability
of local support through a global network of reseller and integrator
partners," said Peter Casier, Director of the WFP Support Office.
"Our reasons for working with Proxim go beyond the company's
proven expertise in wireless products," said J.M. Campbell, Manager of
NexTech Trading. "Proxim worked with us to address the unique needs of
WFP, whether it was increasing the length of a coax cable for a
particular order or arranging training for field engineers. After one
significant emergency, Proxim was able to cut lead times for equipment
in half, and that is the kind of responsiveness which I think has made
this partnership successful."
"Proxim is pleased to meet the needs of a global organization such
as the United Nations World Food Programme," said Lionel Chmilewsky,
Proxim's Vice President of International Sales. "We have a long
heritage of supporting relief and rebuilding efforts following
catastrophic events. Proxim has an unparalleled reputation for
technology leadership, global reach and world-class support, and along
with WFP and NexTech, we have demonstrated that these strengths stand
up to the harshest of conditions."
