Extended Systems (NASDAQ: XTND), a leading provider of
mobile software solutions, today announced that Grania Willis,
equestrian correspondent at the Irish Times, has sent email messages
and digital images capturing her bid to become the first Irish woman
to climb the north side of Mount Everest. Using a PDA device enabled
with Extended Systems' OneBridge Mobile Groupware solution, Grania has
been sending Irish Times readers regular updates of her ascent of the
world's highest mountain, one of the most extreme and hostile
locations ever to be linked by electronic communications.
Grania launched her challenge to become the first Irish woman to
climb Everest via the mountain's technically demanding north side in
aid of two organisations in the front line against cancer, The Friends
of St. Luke's Hospital and the Irish Hospice Foundation, in March. The
expedition is sponsored by HP Ireland and Sord Data Systems, Extended
Systems' Irish reseller partner, who provided the necessary technology
equipment to allow her to send the articles and images published in
the Irish Times twice weekly during the expedition.
Grania commented: "Extended Systems' mobile solution has been very
easy to use and amazingly helpful in sharing my diary and pictures
with the outside world, something which would have been unthinkable
just a few years ago. The whole Sord team has been extremely helpful
in assisting me throughout the expedition and helping me to learn how
to use the different technologies comfortably."
Grania is supplied with an HP iPAQ 4700, connecting to the
Internet via a mobile satellite uplink to the Thuraya satellite
positioned 22,000 miles above the Earth. The iPAQ 4700 syncs with
Extended Systems' OneBridge email synchronisation server located in
Sord's premises and gives Grania access to instant communication via
email. She has also been given an HP R707 5 Mega Pixel Digital Camera
to capture events as they happen.
"Our OneBridge Mobile Platform provides a totally flexible
framework from which organisations can launch their mobile strategy.
Grania's climb demonstrates that the technology works anywhere,
regardless of the location or the connection method. It can be
utilized in the most remote place on Earth since it will work via
satellite as well. Where other competitors would fail to deliver,
supporting only GPRS connections, OneBridge can function normally
under these conditions," said Charles Jepson, President and CEO at
Extended Systems.
Sord's Business Development Manager, Brendan O'Brien, stated: "The
challenge to Sord was to source, integrate and test all the necessary
equipment in a short period of time. We were greatly assisted by
Grania's rapid appreciation and enthusiasm to embrace new
communications technologies in a very short timeframe."
OneBridge Mobile Groupware enables mobile device users to receive
live, instant access to email and PIM (personal information
management) information, working independently of connection mode,
time and location and providing the highest possible levels of
reliability with the widest range of connection choices.
