PLATO Learning, Inc. (NASDAQ: TUTR), a leading provider of K–adult
computer-based and e-learning solutions, today announced an expanded
partnership with Fordham University (NY). Following a successful pilot
program at the Fordham High School for the Arts—aimed
at helping Bronx, N.Y., high school students with difficulties in math
and preparing them for the New York State Regents Exam—the
Fordham University Center for Professional Development has implemented a
more comprehensive PLATO Learning program at its 21st
Century Learning Center in the Bronx.
Using a grant from the state of New York to establish a 21st
Century Learning Center in the Bronx, Fordham University now offers
middle and high school students free access to online
course credit recovery in math, English, language arts and other
subjects using New York standards-aligned content from PLATO Learning.
The program, which will run in nine-week cycles throughout the school
year and summer, also provides technology enrichment, mentoring,
opportunities to participate in university and cultural events, and
technology training for parents. In addition to leveraging the full
library of online middle and high school content from PLATO Learning,
the Fordham program will also utilize the PLATO®
Exam Intervention solution delivered via the PLATO
Learning Environment™ (PLE™)
to prepare students for the New York Regents Exam.
"PLATO Learning offers a powerful educational solution on a number of
levels," said Steven D’Agustino, Ph.D.,
director of Regional Educational Technology Center (RETC) for Fordham
University. "PLATO offers students support for when they become
discouraged, helps them recover credits and prepare for key exams, and
provides valuable skills that can be used in the workforce and in
college. PLATO also provides a means to bridging the digital divide that
often plagues schools in the Bronx."
Iris Blige, principal at the Bronx Academy of Arts has witnessed
first-hand students, who were initially hesitant about participating in
the pilot program, get involved and excited about the program at
Fordham. “They’re
beginning to take more accountability for their own learning,”
Blige said. “They are realizing that it is
attainable. And in the process they are learning that just because you
weren’t that stellar student doesn’t
mean you can’t go to college.”
“We are delighted to join with Fordham
University to improve academic opportunities for students in the Bronx,”
said Mike Morache, president and CEO for PLATO Learning. “We
commend the University’s leadership and
commitment to advancing skills for the 21st
century economy, and we are proud to play a part in their vision for
improving student achievement.”
