PLATO Learning, Inc. (NASDAQ:TUTR), a leading provider of K–adult
computer-based and e-learning solutions, today announced the release of
Academic Systems®
Algebra—a full-course developmental
mathematics solution for the post-secondary market. The three-course
series builds upon the success of PLATO®
Interactive Mathematics, with new features, functionality, and
capabilities to help students understand, master, and apply the
principles of algebra—knowledge and skills
necessary to succeed in college or the workplace.
According to a 2006 Alliance for Excellent Education report, Paying
Double: Inadequate High Schools and Community College Remediation,
nearly one-third of all community and four-year college freshman enroll
in remedial courses because they are underprepared for college-level
courses. Academic Systems Algebra translates technology into engaging,
motivating learning tools that lead to increases in overall pass rates,
retention, and persistence. It actively engages students in learning and
applying mathematics by providing comprehensive, self-paced instruction
in prealgebra, elementary algebra, and intermediate algebra—helping
students gain the skills they need to quickly progress into
college-level math courses.
Academic Systems Algebra combines state-of-the-art animation and
graphics with audio, video, and text to accommodate multiple adult
learning styles. Plus, with a browser and Internet access, students and
faculty can access Academic Systems Algebra anytime, anywhere. Lesson
content is highly interactive and engaging, unlike static content
typically available in electronic or print textbooks. The flexible
design allows instructors the freedom to decide when and how the content
will be used. It also provides consistent instruction by faculty and
adjuncts alike, while allowing for on-campus, distance learning, or
blended programs to accommodate the needs of a variety of teaching
models.
“The Academic Systems Algebra series is the
result of insight gained from our customers,”
said Mike Morache, PLATO Learning president and CEO. “We
knew that our PLATO Interactive Mathematics customers wanted updated
technology, online delivery, and simplified hardware compatibility, so
we delivered the most powerful, accessible higher education solution we’ve
ever designed.”
Long-time users of PLATO Interactive Mathematics, such as Larry
Huntzinger, mathematics instructor at Western Oklahoma State College,
are embracing the new solution and taking full advantage of its new
features. “Academic Systems Algebra helps
teach students of any age how to teach themselves using computer-aided
learning…I tell my students that they have to
be in charge of their own learning, and it’s
very empowering for them to realize their goals using the software,”
said Huntzinger. “The best part about our
Academic Systems implementation is that I get to spend more one-on-one
time with students.”
