TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a leading provider of mission-critical wireless communications, today announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,424,293 for "User Plane Location Based Service Using Message Tunneling To Support Roaming."

This TCS invention allows a wireless user to receive precise location services when roaming. Roaming is the physical movement of a wireless user among regions covered by different wireless carriers. The invention solves the roaming problem by using a direct communications path inside the operator's firewalls for both the user's home and visiting mobile operator, so that precise location information can be exchanged. Jamie Moss, wireless analyst at Informa Telecoms states, "The ability for wireless users to roam and still access their location based services will be key for mobile operators when providing precision LBS."

The invention is specifically related to the Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) standard that is being deployed by GSM and UMTS operators worldwide for their Assisted GPS deployments. The described invention is implemented in the TCS XypointŪ Location Platform.

"Without roaming support, applications such as navigation that are targeted at highly mobile users will have trouble working across long distances," said Drew Morin, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer for TCS. "As more mobile operators deploy precise location applications, the requirement for location roaming will expand in order to ensure a consistent user experience."

TCS now holds 61 patents with 194 applications pending.

About The Invention

The "User Plane Location Based Service Using Message Tunneling To Support Roaming" patent describes a method and apparatus for providing User Plane location based service to a roaming wireless device. The invention establishes a User Plane roaming interface between the visited roaming carrier and the user's home carrier via an Internet Protocol connection. A message tunneling mechanism is formed through each carrier's firewall to provide an uninterrupted communication path.
