tronc, Inc. is pleased to announce the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times have been honored by the 2017 Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE) Awards.

The Chicago Tribune’s David Jackson, Gary Marx, Duaa Eldeib, Alicia Fabbre, and Stacey Wescott were recognized with the IRE Award for Investigations Triggered by Breaking News for their series that followed the days and weeks after the death of Chicago toddler, Semaj Crosby. Their stories exposed the dysfunction at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, including inexcusable government failures in the management of Crosby’s case. The gut-wrenching and remarkably well-told stories led to state investigations of the agency.

The Los Angeles Times was a finalist in the Print/Online category for two investigations, “Mexico’s Housing Debacle: A Failed Vision” and “The Secret Life of a USC Dean.”

Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting. IRE was formed in 1975 to create a forum in which journalists throughout the world could help each other by sharing story ideas, newsgathering techniques and news sources. In addition, Richard Marosi of the Los Angeles Times was recognized for his reporting on “Mexico’s Housing Debacle: A Failed Vision” by the 79th Annual Overseas Press Club of America Awards in the category for Best reporting in any medium on Latin America. Drawing on documents, interviews and inspection of 50 developments from Tijuana to the Gulf of Mexico, Marosi chronicled how corruption, poor planning and impunity trapped thousands of Mexicans in unhealthy, sub-standard housing many could not afford.

The Overseas Press Club of America is the nation’s oldest and largest association of journalists engaged in international news. Every April, it awards the most prestigious prizes devoted exclusively to international news coverage. It was founded in 1939 by nine foreign correspondents in New York City, and has grown to 450 members world-wide. The club’s mission is to uphold the highest standards in news reporting, advance press freedom and promote good fellowship among colleagues. It also aims to help educate a new generation of journalists and to contribute to the freedom and independence of the press throughout the world.
