SunPower Corp. to Help Build Solar Power Canopy System at JFK Airport

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Thursday said it would be working with SunPower Corp. to build New York state's largest solar power canopy storage system at JFK International Airport.

The Port Authority said the 12.3MW solar energy system will create a carport canopy with solar panels on top to provide covered parking for about 3,000 parking spaces. The project also includes 5 to 7.5MW of battery storage.

Construction on the project is slated to begin next year and is expected to be completed in 2022.

"Once completed, the solar-generated electricity provided to the grid will serve small businesses and low- and moderate-income residents in the surrounding communities," the Port Authority said.

Goldman Sachs Renewable Power LLC was selected to assist with financing of the project, the Port Authority said. "The development team will pay the full up-front construction cost of the project, which is approximately $56 million."
