Sylvan Learning Systems - Online Higher Education(R) Selects
ActiveBatch(R) to Manage Data Processing Jobs
Sylvan Division Chooses Leading Job Scheduling/Management Application to
Improve Data Processing Efficiency Across All Its Institutions
PARSIPPANY, N.J., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Systems Concepts, Inc.
(ASCI), a leading provider of system software solutions that enhance
Windows(TM), UNIX, and OpenVMS systems, announced today that Sylvan Learning
Systems, Inc. has chosen ASCI's ActiveBatch(R) scheduling software for its
Online Higher Education division (OHE) consisting of Walden University,
National Technological University, and Canter and Associates. OHE will use
ActiveBatch to coordinate and manage all data processing tasks for OHE's
various institutions and platforms in order to improve resource utilization and
overall processing efficiency.
ActiveBatch, ASCI's flagship product, is the industry's most advanced job
scheduling, monitoring, and management application. Its powerful graphical
interface allows operators to instantly view and monitor active jobs while
giving them a total view of dependencies and other ongoing system
relationships. Sylvan-OHE will be using ActiveBatch to handle data transfers,
nightly batch jobs, and scheduled backups for approximately 20 corporate
servers; the application will also provide centralized scheduling and
monitoring of various processes, automatically correcting errors as they are
found.
"Right now we have scheduling at multiple locations and across a number of
different servers without a central way of managing it all," said Mike Pyland,
Director of Release Management for Sylvan. "ActiveBatch can tell us what is
running at any one time, anywhere in our enterprise. It also will be able to
manage our dependencies better. The software watches all the different jobs
and all the jobs are managed from one centralized console. You can see them
all in one convenient dashboard view instead of looking at different machines
and pulling all the schedules together, which can be a long, tedious, and
inaccurate job."
"Before choosing ActiveBatch, we carefully evaluated and reviewed all major
products in the Job Scheduling market," said Mehmet Efe, Webmaster and Senior
QA Engineer at Sylvan. "We narrowed our search to two alternatives and
ultimately selected ActiveBatch for its flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and
low overhead. Upon deployment, ActiveBatch immediately proved to be up to the
challenge of managing all our task dependencies across multiple platforms and
locations."
Pyland expects that ActiveBatch will save Sylvan time by managing schedules and
resolving conflicts quickly. "We won't overload any servers by scheduling all
the jobs at any one time, so we can make better use of our resources," he
noted. "Plus, if we need to bring down a server because of a security patch,
we'll know exactly which scheduled jobs we're interfering with. ActiveBatch
has superior recovery abilities, so we won't have to do as much manual kickoff
of those jobs after downtime of any server."
ActiveBatch is a comprehensive, scalable, one-stop solution for unattended job
execution across a variety of software platforms. Its broad range of
capabilities provides a comprehensive strategy for coordinating, managing, and
monitoring single and repetitive applications and jobs. ActiveBatch implements
scheduling through a wide range of criteria, including date, time, system
resources, dependencies, triggers, and events. Through ActiveBatch's use of
workload balancing, enterprises enjoy high availability and scalability in
their job processing activities.
Sylvan Learning Systems' Online Higher Education (OHE) has already begun
installing ActiveBatch and expects to have the software fully implemented in
early Q2. For more information about ASCI's ActiveBatch job scheduling and
