The 5th annual Rubber Ducky Derby is a fundraising event organized by Special Olympics Illinois and sponsored by RCN. The competition will begin at 1:00 pm when more than 30,000 rubber ducks will be dropped into the Chicago River and race from the Columbus Drive Bridge to Michigan Avenue. RCN is celebrating its 4th year supporting the Windy City Rubber Ducky Derby and has donated $21,000 in advertising to promote the event. In addition, RCN will adopt a team of ducks to participate in the derby.
"We are pleased to support the Windy City Rubber Ducky Derby because it helps raise public awareness of Special Olympics," said Tom McKay, GM of RCN-Chicago. "As a local provider of cable, phone and Internet services, we believe it's important to be involved in the communities we serve. So, we are happy to assist them in raising funds and providing encouragement for their wonderful athletes."
All proceeds from the Rubber Ducky Derby directly benefit the more than 25,000 athletes served by Special Olympics Illinois. As an added value, those who adopt a rubber duck become eligible to win prizes such as a shopping spree, vacation, flat screen TV and more. "We are very appreciative of RCN's support," said Doug Snyder, President and CEO of Special Olympics Illinois. "It enables us to continue our work to provide opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities to develop strength, courage and a connectedness to their friends and family. The advertising that RCN donated will also help increase awareness for this much-anticipated event."
