Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK), a market leader in multi-service
edge routers for next generation IP networks, today announced the
appointment of Dr. Alan Lippman as chief video architect and director of
technology planning. One of the fathers of streaming media, Dr. Lippman
helped invent streaming audio and video products for Real Networks
twelve years ago and will help develop software technologies for Redback
that will allow telephone carriers to accelerate the delivery of
high-bandwidth video services.
“Video is the biggest game-changer in network
routing today. It is also the single biggest force driving network
upgrades worldwide. We’re thrilled Alan
Lippman is joining our Redback team,” said
Scott Marshall, senior vice president, engineering and product
management at Redback Networks. “As one of the
original developers of streaming media, Lippman adds a very unique set
of skills to Redback, focused on the delivery of IP-based audio and
video over broadband networks. Lippman is a recognized expert in
managing video and audio delivery in both multicast and unicast network
environments. Redback is laser-focused on accelerating video network
innovation on behalf of our carrier customers.”
Dr. Lippman was one of the first five employees at RealNetworks, and was
one of the original creators of RealAudio and RealVideo, which have been
downloaded hundreds of millions of times. He was the first member of the
development team for RealAudio, and served as chief engineer and as a
key developer for all major product releases for RealVideo through 2001.
At RealNetworks, Dr. Lippman was the principal architect behind the
real-time encoding and decoding of audio and video on the web that later
became known as ‘streaming media.’
In 2001, Dr. Lippman founded Trusted Media Networks, Inc. (TMN), a
start-up focused on the delivery of high-bandwidth audio and video over
any size network pipe, where he filed several patents focused on audio
and video delivery. Dr. Lippman holds a BSM in Mathematics from the
University of Washington, which he received at the age of 14, and
graduated at 18 with a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Brown
University. Before working as a software developer, Lippman worked as an
oceanographer, studying climate change and predicting significant
weather events. At Redback, Lippman will work directly for Marshall.
“Redback has a great history of Internet
innovation, creating smart but simple network platforms to integrate
broadband, phone and TV services for carriers,”
said Dr. Lippman. “I believe the next wave of
growth opportunities will introduce more innovation in the next three
years than the last 30 years combined. I look forward to helping Redback
improve the delivery of audio and video over wired and mobile
infrastructures.”
