Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (“PSI”) (NASDAQ: PSYS) today announced that the late David Guymon was named TRAUMA Champion in the State of Florida for 2008 at the Many Faces of Trauma Conference sponsored by The University-Community Trauma Research Group, Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, University of South Florida (USF-FMHI). Mr. Guymon was CEO of PSI’s Manatee Palms Youth Services inpatient psychiatric facility in Bradenton, Florida. The award recognizes Mr. Guymon’s commitment to trauma informed care and his leading role in the outstanding application of this care by the Manatee Palms facility. Through his leadership, every staff member involved in resident interactions became skilled and capable of trauma informed care sensitivity. As a result, the Manatee Palms facility produced the leading results in a multi-facility analysis by USF-FMHI on the application of trauma informed care in residential settings, which was commissioned by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. “The recognition of Dave Guymon with this award is a wonderful memorial to a talented, committed and inspirational man,” said Joey Jacobs, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of PSI. Despite suffering from ALS, he led the charge in transforming Manatee Palms over the past year into an exemplary facility, after we voluntarily closed it for the summer of 2007 for reprogramming and renovation. He was fully dedicated to caring for the patients of Manatee Palms and keeping them safe. Through the ‘culture of transparency’ that he and the entire staff of Manatee Palms put into practice, this facility has helped pioneer innovative and meaningful change in the best interests of traumatized youth. With Dave’s passing in September, the continuing strength of this facility has become a great legacy, as is the lasting positive impact he had on the facility’s patients and their families.” Victoria Hummer, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., Department of Child & Family Studies, Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, University of South Florida, who is Project Director for the Trauma Informed Care Study and who presented the award at the Many Faces of Trauma Conference, remarked, “Through this award, we were pleased to honor Dave Guymon for his extraordinary vision and effort to incorporate trauma informed care principles into the leadership, policies, and practices within mental health residential treatment for children with behavioral and emotional disorders. With the support of Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. and the dedication of his hardworking staff, Dave brought about the transformation of Manatee Palms from a facility that was closed due to safety concerns to one that continues to make dynamic, innovative and positive leaps toward a culture of safety and trauma sensitivity. Dave exemplifies the meaning of Trauma Champion and is the first recipient of this award, which will be given annually in the state of Florida in his name and to preserve his legacy.” PSI offers an extensive continuum of behavioral health programs to critically ill children, adolescents and adults and is the largest operator of owned or leased freestanding psychiatric inpatient facilities with over 10,000 beds in 31 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. PSI also manages freestanding psychiatric inpatient facilities for government agencies and psychiatric inpatient units within medical/surgical hospitals owned by others.
