Proxim Introduces Starter Kit for Global Wireless ISP Market
Special Bundled Offering Enables Rapid, Low-Cost, Services Deployment
WISPCON VII, BALTIMORE, March 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Proxim Corporation
(NASDAQ:PROX), a global leader in wireless networking equipment for Wi-Fi and
broadband wireless networks, today announced a starter kit and subscriber unit
bundle for the fast growing international Wireless Internet Service Provider
(WISP) market. Designed to give WISPs a swift and cost- effective way to begin
offering broadband wireless services, the Proxim WISP Starter Kit includes a
range of convenient product bundles, featuring Proxim's Tsunami MP.11 Model
5054-R point-to-multipoint Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) system, that
addresses small- to large-scale WISP deployments.
With the increased demand for broadband Internet service in both rural and
urban areas that are not being served by incumbent providers, there is a
growing opportunity for WISPs to deploy services for both fixed and mobile
environments. According to a recent research report by Part-15.Org, the number
of U.S. based WISPs has grown from 300 in 1998 to nearly 8,500 in 2004.
Skylight Research predicts that the total broadband wireless access market will
grow from $515 million in 2004 to over $1.5 billion in 2006. Further, Asia and
Eastern Europe are projected to have even larger WISP markets than the U.S. by
2005 according to Maravedis' Broadband Wireless Intelligence report.
Using Proxim's Tsunami MP.11 BWA Systems today, and WiMAX Forum Certified
systems from Proxim in the future, WISPs can quickly and cost-effectively offer
broadband services to users -- particularly in rural areas, new home or
business park developments and RV parks, where it may be impossible or too
costly to deploy fiber-based solutions. Proxim's BWA Systems also allow these
WISPs to address unique applications such as public safety and commuter or
recreational transportation.
Proxim's ruggedized, high capacity Tsunami MP.11 Model 5054-R utilizes Proxim's
BWA Software Platform, a comprehensive set of wireless networking capabilities
that enables WiMAX applications today and provides a clear migration to
standards-based WiMAX Forum Certified products for the future. In addition to
advanced performance, security and basic networking features, the BWA Software
Platform incorporates unique features that are purpose-built to support WiMAX
applications such as public safety, security and surveillance, last mile access
and municipal networking applications now. Key among these is its
industry-first roaming capability, which allows Subscriber Units to be placed
on moving vehicles, where they can roam between multiple Base Stations.
Michigan-based M-33 Access is one of several WISPs currently using Proxim's
Tsunami MP.11 starter kit to deliver wireless broadband services. Glenn Wilson,
president and CEO of M-33 Access commented, "With its excellent bandwidth and
throughput. Proxim's Tsunami MP.11 facilitated the successful expansion of our
Wireless Internet grid and allowed our company to provide broadband Internet
access to schools, businesses and homes in numerous, rural Michigan
communities."
"There are substantial opportunities right now for savvy VARs and integrators
to build a successful WISP business," said Jeff Orr, senior product marketing
manager for Proxim. "With our global WISP starter kit promotion, these
organizations can bring broadband wireless services to market very quickly and
affordably."
Proxim's WISP Starter Kits are conveniently bundled and include one Tsunami
MP.11 5054-R base station unit with an external sector antenna and six
subscriber units with integrated antennas. Educational and marketing materials
specific to the WISP market including case studies, white papers, presentations
and brochures are available at http://www.proxim.com/saveabundle.
The WISP Starter Kits are currently available from the following Proxim
partners in North America: Winncom, Somera and Connectronics; in EMEA: NoWire,
Anixter, Winncom, Veracomp, Comstor GmbH Germany, ACAL UK, Data Equipment,
Daimer, Sistelec, Multicap and Interlek; in Asia Pacific: LAN1, Spawne System
and Palette Multimedia. Organizations can purchase additional subscriber unit
packs in quantities of 10, 100 or 1000 at a discounted cost, to address
deployments of any size. Special promotional pricing for Proxim's WISP Starter
Kit and subscriber unit bundles starts at $600 U.S., and is available until
June 30, 2005.
Current and prospective WISPs can hear more about the WISP Starter Kit
promotion and other service opportunities by attending Proxim's presentations
at WISPCON VII in Baltimore, MD, March 20th - 22nd, 2005. Proxim will present
the following sessions: "New Market Opportunities for WISPs" and "Proxim
Configuration Session" on Monday, March 21st at 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.,
respectively. The sessions are designed to help WISPs succeed early in
deployment by identifying the right opportunities. The sessions will include
WISP deployment examples and detailed information on how WISPs can be part of
the rapidly emerging market for bringing broadband to any location -- fixed or
mobile. In addition, Proxim will demonstrate its Tsunami MP.11 BWA Systems at
the show in booth #201.
