Plumtree Beats IBM, BEA, Microsoft and Vignette in Network
Computing Product Review
Plumtree Enterprise Web Suite Gets High Marks for Service Oriented Architecture
and Openness to Heterogeneous Environments
SAN FRANCISCO, April 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Enterprise Web leader
Plumtree Software today announced that the Plumtree Enterprise Web Suite beat
IBM, Microsoft, BEA and Vignette portals in the April 15th Network Computing
"Portal Power" product review. Network Computing, a top information technology
publication, evaluated vendors' portal frameworks on overall architecture and
implementation, ability to integrate with standards- based applications and
services, security features, price and development capabilities. Plumtree
bested BEA by 32%, Microsoft by 18%, IBM by 13% and Vignette by 10%, receiving
high marks across the integration, architecture, customization and security
categories.
"Plumtree has embraced a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and uses the model
to create a highly distributable and ostensibly scalable system. This was a
marked difference from IBM's and BEA's platforms, which support only portlets
developed within the J2EE architecture and require Java or JSP," wrote Lori
MacVittie of Network Computing in the April 15th review. "Usually you can't run
.NET within a J2EE architecture because they're very different languages --
it's usually all .NET or all J2EE. We liked the extensibility of Plumtree's
architecture because it lets you deploy portlets without regard for platform or
operating system."
Plumtree also received highest marks for its prebuilt integration, architecture
manageability, identity management, security and document management. Network
Computing noted that Plumtree's universal search capability was a significant
differentiator: "We were impressed with the [Plumtree Enterprise Web] suite's
search functionality, which lets users perform federated searches and
aggregates search results from within the portal from a content-management
system and from external sources, such as Google and Inktomi sites. The
platforms from IBM and Sun don't provide any portlet searches."
"This product evaluation validates our view that we are the best solution for
customers who want a portal for building service-oriented applications based on
the application servers they already have," said Plumtree CEO John Kunze.
"Every portal vendor promises support for all sorts of Web services, but this
review makes it clear that the way an IBM or BEA portal works is by hosting all
the code on one application server. This model works for a limited number of
applications, but not for applications that bridge different businesses,
business units and systems."
