Greensboro, N.C., City Driver Brian Walker, now a four-time state champion, won
first place in the sleeper truck class. Walker, a member of the 2004-2005 North
Carolina Road Team and prior member of Overnite's annually appointed All-Star
Road Team, an elite corps of the company's top professionals, is the son of
former national truck driving champion and retired Overnite driver Linwood
Walker.
Winning his competition class and another shot at a national title was
Greensboro City Driver Ty Bentley, who earned the top score in the four-axle
division. This will mark Bentley's third trip to the Nationals having won state
titles previously in 2000 and 2001.
As state title-holders, Bentley and Walker will represent the company at the
National Truck Driving Championships this summer in Tampa, Fla.
Also delivering a strong performance in his rookie year at the competition was
fellow Greensboro driver Jose Medina, who came in third in the five-axle
division.
A team of eight drivers represented the company at the Smithfield event. In
addition to negotiating the competition course, all competitors are rated on
their driving skills, scored on a written test and a personal interview, and
must have excellent safety records.
On May 16, UPS (NYSE:UPS) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Overnite
Corporation for $1.25 billion.
