The Governance Institute, a service of National Research Corporation, partnered with the Jefferson School of Population Health (JSPH) to present a one-day training program on quality and safety for board members who attended The Governance Institute's Leadership Conference earlier this month at The Breakers in Palm Beach, FL. The program was led by Dr. David B. Nash, dean of The Thomas Jefferson University School of Population Health. A total of 33 attendees (including 26 board members and seven healthcare executives) participated in this inaugural training session, which focused on strategic and tactical issues involved in creating a cutting-edge quality and safety governance program. The interactive training included practical examples of the board's role and the role of the quality committee in quality and patient safety efforts, and incorporated the perspectives of all affected stakeholders in the healthcare system. Upon successful completion of the course, board members received a certificate from The Governance Institute and JSPH. Feedback from attendees was extremely positive. "There is a critical need to ensure that patients receive the best quality care without harm, at all times," said The Governance Institute's CEO Jona Raasch. "So boards have a vital responsibility to hardwire this into their organization's culture. This training program provides valuable take-home lessons for boards looking to accomplish this goal." The Governance Institute will hold this special training program again on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at The Greenbrier, a resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, just prior to the opening of its Leadership Conference.
