EDISON, N.J., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- New Brunswick Scientific Co., Inc. (NBS) (NASDAQ:NBSC), a leading provider of a comprehensive line of research equipment and scientific instrumentation for use in the life science industry, today announced the passing of co-founder and Former Director Emeritus Sigmund "Siggy" Freedman, Friday, February 3. He was 89. Sigmund's brother, NBS Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David Freedman reminisced: "Without Siggy there would be no New Brunswick Scientific. Sigmund and I incorporated NBS in 1958 as the successor to a business we founded together in 1946. With his guidance, our company successfully transitioned from an industrial tool-and-die focus into a leading factor in the global life sciences equipment market. "What most people don't know, however, is that his life outside of New Brunswick Scientific was unusually rich and multifaceted. He was a World War II veteran who earned the rank of corporal and saw combat from North Africa through Italy, France and Austria. His last duty was assisting newly liberated Allied POWs and displaced persons. He was also an actor, sharing the stage with the likes of Clifford Odets, Paul Muni and Maurice Schwartz in the 1930s. He later delighted in his art collections, especially of rare decorative glass and tapestries, and was a philanthropist of note." President and Chief Operating Officer James Orcutt added: "We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the Freedman family. We are grateful for the countless contributions Siggy made to NBS, from its founding nearly 60 years ago until his retirement in 2003. He will be missed."
