SAN DIEGO, May 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MXWL), a leading developer and manufacturer of ultracapacitor-based energy storage and power delivery, today announced that it has been named a Cool Vendor in the "Cool Vendors in Automotive Electronics, 2014" [1] report by Gartner, Inc. The Cool Vendors in the report develop innovative technology in the areas of human-machine interface, energy storage and machine vision for automotive applications. Maxwell is one of the few ultracapacitor manufacturers that supplies to the automotive industry, which is known for long development cycles and stringent requirements for components, and for developing faster, more efficient product production due to its unique dry electrode fabrication process.
James Hines, research director of Gartner and co-author of the report, wrote, "As cars become more connected, automated and green than ever before, the computational power and related electronics technology that underlie these capabilities has become critical elements of automobile development."
"As Gartner confirms, more automotive companies are looking for electronics technology, that helps meet higher fuel-efficiency standards," said John Warwick, Maxwell's chief operating officer. "Because our ultracapacitors hold the required automotive-quality certifications, deliver high power and can accept a high rate of charge, they're ideal for high-power automotive applications. More companies are joining the ranks of Continental, which developed an ultracapacitor-based voltage stabilization system for PSA Peugeot-Citroen, and Lamborghini, which uses ultracapacitors in its stop-start system in the Aventador sports car."
There are several uses for ultracapacitors in automotive applications, including regenerative braking systems, start-stop systems, high-power consumer support for components such as power steering and air conditioning compressors, and boardnet stabilization. Unlike batteries, which produce and store energy by means of a chemical reaction, Maxwell's ultracapacitor products store energy in an electric field that is larger than that of a capacitor—meaning ultracapacitors have greater energy storage capacity than capacitors. The ultracapacitors can charge and discharge in as little as fractions of a second, perform in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees to +65 degrees C, operate reliably through one million or more charge/discharge cycles and resist shock, vibration and overcharging.
