SecureWave today announced a partnership with Lexar Media, Inc. (Nasdaq: LEXR), a leading manufacturer of removable flash memory cards and USB flash drives, to develop and market an enterprise-class privacy solution for controlling personal storage devices. The companies plan to jointly make available solutions that will provide more granular control and cryptographic security for portable storage devices to ensure compliance with regulations, prevent malicious and unintentional data leakage, and preserve corporate assets. Additionally, Lexar becomes the first vendor to join the SecureWave Hardware Vendor Partnership Program, the industry's first certification program for portable storage media. The Program provides hardware manufacturers like Lexar with the designation of being enterprise-ready, meeting all the criteria that companies are looking for - scalability, security, performance and availability. According to a recent Gartner study, loss and theft of mobile devices is the most common exposure to data leakage when data is taken outside the office. To mitigate these risks while still allowing users to enjoy the full benefits of the devices, policies and controls must be put in place. With SecureWave's Sanctuary and Lexar's secure enterprise personal storage devices working in conjunction with each other, users will be required to utilize only authorized portable devices in accordance with policies that can govern time, encryption, volume of data, data transfer and other administrator-set criteria. The technical integration of support for Lexar's secure enterprise personal storage devices into SecureWave's Sanctuary also makes Lexar the first hardware partner that SecureWave will work with on this type of enterprise-ready solution. "From a business perspective, personal storage devices like USB flash drives are incredibly powerful business tools, enabling employees to easily transfer mass amounts of data from one location to another, and be productive out of the office. The problems arise when policies are not developed and strictly enforced for the use of these devices. This can result in drastic consequences such as data theft and the compromise of corporate assets," said Joe Unsworth, a Principal Analyst at Gartner. SecureWave's Sanctuary provides policy-based control for the devices and applications that can be used on enterprise endpoints. Using an automated whitelist approach, Sanctuary allows only those devices and applications that have been approved for use with its PCs, laptops and servers. The SecureWave Hardware Vendor Partnership Program allows portable storage device manufacturers to market all the enterprise benefits of its solutions while ensuring their commitment to device safety. "Enterprises need to look no further than to the front page of the newspaper to see the dangers of not properly managing removable storage devices," said Bob Johnson, CEO of SecureWave. "By creating the SecureWave Hardware Vendor Partnership Program and working with Lexar, a technology innovator, we are able to provide businesses with security solutions that protect and secure an organization's private, corporate data while still enabling users to experience the full convenience and potential of personal storage devices." "At Lexar, we understand that data stored on our personal storage devices is often confidential and highly sensitive," said Farshid Tabrizi, General Manager of Enterprise and OEM Products at Lexar. "In order to guarantee that our business and government customers have a simple, reliable way to ensure security we have partnered with SecureWave to deploy end-to-end policy enforcement technologies for personal storage devices. This way we can add the extra layer of security and offer products that are not only effective at transferring and sharing data, but also at keeping it safe inside and outside corporate or enterprise networks."
