University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Goes
Live on IDX(R) Carecast(TM) Electronic Patient Records System
New technology supports efficiency and enhances patient care Key milestone for
electronic patient record progress in UK
LONDON and BURLINGTON, Vt., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- IDX Systems Corporation
(NASDAQ:IDXC) and University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation
Trust today announced the launch of the first phase of the Trust's
state-of-the-art IDX(R) Carecast(TM) electronic patient records (EPR) system,
which went live across all eight of the Trust's hospitals earlier this week.
This first phase of the Carecast activation replaces the Trust's existing
patient administration system and provides additional functions in the Accident
& Emergency (A&E) and Maternity departments.
UCLH Chief Executive Robert Naylor said: "The successful implementation of
Carecast is an exciting moment in the development of our state-of-the-art
electronic patient record. It will enable us to work more efficiently and
safely, bringing immediate benefits to our patients and staff. It coincides
with the opening of the new 422m pounds Sterling University College Hospital
last week and clearly demonstrates progress towards the Trust's 'world class'
ambitions. It also points the way forward in modernising the NHS."
UCLH is the first healthcare organisation in the UK to use Carecast. Under the
NHS National Programme for IT, IDX is working with BT to deliver Carecast to
Trusts throughout the London region, recognized as a centre for healthcare
excellence in the UK. As one of the largest and most clinically sophisticated
Trusts in the NHS, UCLH represents a significant milestone for Carecast in the
UK and sets the stage for the larger undertaking.
"Carecast is one of the first products to meet the rigorous standards of the
National Programme for IT, so this go-live is a great milestone for electronic
medical records in the UK," said James H. Crook Jr., Chief Executive Officer of
IDX. "This go-live builds on IDX's history of success in the UK at Chelsea and
Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust in London, and points the way to continued
success in the future."
During preparations for the UCLH go-live, approximately 1.5 million patient
records were transferred into Carecast, and more than 2,100 staff received EPR
training. Since the go-live, more than 1,000 UCLH staff have been using
Carecast to carry out patient administration functions, including patient
registrations, appointments, admissions, discharges and transfers, bed
management and commissioning.
To date, the system is handling approximately 250,000 transactions a day with
consistent sub second response times. IDX and UCLH expect the number of
transactions processed per day by Carecast to well exceed the million mark as
UCLH goes live on additional clinical functionality. Based on the reliable HP
NonStop(TM) platform, Carecast is distinguished in the healthcare IT industry
for its guaranteed 99.9 percent uptime and significant scalability.
Within the A&E, staff are starting to use Carecast's 'electronic whiteboard' to
facilitate patients' progress through the department. In the near future,
entries on the whiteboard will show real-time, colour-coded information on how
long patients have been waiting and will alert clinicians when lab results are
available. They can also use Carecast to make patient information immediately
available online to clinicians once patients are admitted to a ward.
In the Maternity department, midwives are using Carecast clinical assessment
tools, making it easier for them to monitor, assess and communicate to each
other the health status of mothers and babies. Every baby born at UCLH will
begin life with its own comprehensive electronic medical record and will have
the potential of a lifetime record accessible anywhere they receive medical
care, across the country.
"This initial launch of Carecast at UCLH is an important achievement for both
UCLH and IDX," said Kevin Jarrold, UCLH's Director of Information Management.
"Healthcare is one of the most complex environments within which to introduce
IT and the project has required a close partnership between the Trust and IDX
to adapt Carecast to our particular needs. We look forward to building on that
as we expand our electronic patient record system to include more clinical
functions over the next year."
During 2005 and 2006, IDX and UCLH expect to extend Carecast functionality to
cover electronic requesting, enhanced A&E tools, care planning, reporting and
pharmacy. UCLH's patient care record will incorporate nearly every facet of
patient care -- medical notes, test results, clinical images, letters,
appointments -- linked into one secure electronic record that can be retrieved
at the touch of a button. Carecast is also expected to integrate with the Picis
Theatre Manager software, the first phase of which was implemented within all
of the Trust's operating theatres earlier this year.
"To adapt Carecast for the UK healthcare environment, IDX partnered closely
with UCLH and drew on our nine years of experience working in London," said Rob
Baker, Managing Director, IDX UK. "The success of our Carecast deployment paves
the way for a robust electronic patient record solution throughout London."
IDX has nearly a decade of experience in providing electronic patient records
in the UK. Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust in London has used
IDX(R) LastWord(R), the predecessor to Carecast, since 1999 to create lifetime
electronic patient records to support improved quality of care, including a
documented 63 percent reduction in last-minute surgery cancellations. The
organisation's electronic patient records system is used in the Trust by more
than 2,000 healthcare professionals to support patient care. The Trust recently
went live with full electronic prescribing in all outpatient clinics --
becoming one of the first Trusts in the UK to accomplish this achievement in an
integrated environment.
