MARKET OVERVIEW
Overseas markets are suffering from a little stage fright today, performing at
their poorest level of the week for this time of the morning. Currently just one
of the 15 markets that we track is positive. The cumulative average return on
the collective stands at minus 0.398 percent. Good news on the job front out of
Canada as the jobless rate fell to 7.5 percent in November from the 7.6 percent
rate in the prior month. The Canadian economy added jobs at a rate above
expectations for a third consecutive month, with November piling on 54,100 jobs
to boost the total to 15,867,400. Analysts were looking for a more modest
increase of 20,000 jobs.
This morning - like a black Blackbird singing in the dead of night...all your
life you were only waiting for this moment to arise (John Lennon & Paul
McCartney). That moment arrives at 8:30 a.m. when the November Non-Farm
Payrolls number is released. Analysts currently see a rise of 150,000, improving
on the 126,000 figure of October. The October report surprised to the upside by
71,000, but the market actually finished lower on the day. The Bush
administration fully expects payrolls to start showing 300,000 monthly
increases. Although the consensus for November is 150,000, I have seen
estimates as high as the 350's. Now just what the market is expecting is an
unknown. Will the market "Take these broken wings and learn to fly" (not that
the market wings are broken, just a little literary license not meant to
belittle the true underlying meaning of a great song)? The companion November
Unemployment Rate is seen holding at 6.0, matching October's 6.0 percent
booking. At 10:00 a.m., the release of the October Factory Orders report is
expected to show a strong 2.2 percent rise, belittling September's 0.5 percent
increase. Consumer Credit is seen relenting to a $5.0 billion rise in October
from the burdening $15.1 billion taken on in September. We'll know for sure at
3:00 p.m.
