Mobile device designers require a low power consumption, 2-bit voltage level translator to resolve mixed voltage compatibility issues in I2C bus applications in consumer devices and mobile phones. To meet this demand, Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) has developed the FXMA2102 – a configurable dual-voltage supply translator and level shifter that translates voltage levels in I2C bus interface applications.

The FXMA2102 is a high performance translator designed for bi-directional voltage translation between any two levels from 1.65V to 5.5V. The two ports of the device have auto-direction sensing capability, allowing either port to sense an input signal and transfer it as an output signal to the other port.

Fairchild’s device accommodates standard and fast I2C bus modes, and works as a translator, buffer and repeater. Additionally, the FXMA2102 features non-preferential power-up, allowing either VCC to be powered-up first. Inputs and outputs track VCC levels, making the device fully configurable. Additionally, the open drain inputs/outputs allow the device to work in push-pull and open drain environments.

The FXMA2102 maximizes load capacitance on the I2C bus, offers lower power consumption than competitive devices and provides ESD protection that exceeds 8kV HBM. Available in an 8-terminal leadless MicroPakTM package (1.6mm x 1.6mm) or Ultrathin MLP (1.2mm x 1.4mm), the FXMA2102 is ideal for use in Smartphones, mobile phones, netbooks, smartbooks, mobile internet devices, portable medical devices and set-top-box designs.

Fairchild offers a targeted portfolio of analog and power IP to support mobile and consumer manufacturers’ specific requirements. Fairchild’s products for mobile and consumer applications complement chipsets in signal path for audio, video, USB, signaling, sensing and timing, and in power management for peripheral cores, lighting and RF.
