FLINT, Mich., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- James Van Tiflin has been named Citizens Banking Corporation's (NASDAQ:CBCF) regional vice chairman for Michigan commercial banking. Van Tiflin had retired from Citizens in 2003 as regional president and business banking manager for Citizens' mid-Michigan region and Citizens' affiliate F&M Bank-Wisconsin. William R. Hartman, Citizens Banking Corporation's chairman, president, and CEO, said in announcing the appointment that he had asked Van Tiflin in 2003 to remain close to the company following his retirement. Hartman noted that Van Tiflin has continued to serve on Citizens Bank's Tri-County Advisory Board of Directors for the Saginaw, Mich., market since that time. "Jim is a very effective leader and he was an important advisor to me when it came to shaping our new vision for the company," Hartman said. "We are very pleased that Jim will now continue his service to Citizens Bank's Michigan markets, providing the company with his banking expertise, client service and community leadership." Reporting to Clint Sampson, executive vice president and regional chairman, Michigan, Van Tiflin's primary focus will be on commercial new business development. In addition, "Jim will be highly effective in assisting us with business retention and mentoring of staff throughout our Michigan markets," Sampson said. Van Tiflin will be headquartered at Citizens Bank's Saginaw, Mich., offices, but will go where he's needed. "This new position provides an excellent opportunity for me to continue to assist the company while maintaining some flexibility," Van Tiflin said. "The primary objective for me is the extent to which I can be helpful to the organization in developing and retaining commercial and wealth client relationships across the Michigan markets." Van Tiflin began his banking career in 1971 at Second National Bank in Saginaw as an installment loan adjustor. He was named vice president at Second National Bank of Bay City in 1975. Van Tiflin rejoined Second National in Saginaw in 1986 as senior vice president in the Commercial Loan Department. Citizens had acquired Second National in 1985. In 1992, Van Tiflin was named senior credit officer of Second National Bank in Saginaw. In 1993, he transferred to Citizens Bank in Flint as executive vice president and commercial loan manager. In 1995, he was named president and CEO of Second National Bank in Saginaw. In 1996, the year that Second National's name was changed to Citizens Bank, Van Tiflin was named president of the bank's mid-Michigan region. In 2000, he received the additional responsibility of regional president of Citizens' affiliate, F&M Bank-Wisconsin. F&M Bank-Wisconsin was renamed Citizens Bank in 2005 when its charter was consolidated with that of Citizens Bank. Following his retirement in 2003, Van Tiflin served as executive director of Saginaw Valley State University's Center for Business and Economic Development while continuing to serve on Citizens Bank's Tri-County Advisory Board of Directors in Saginaw.
