MARKET OVERVIEW
Overseas markets are currently unanimously positive as all 15 of the 15 markets
that we track are in the green. The cumulative average return on the group
stands at a plus 0.840 percent. It appears that the German economy may be
slowly emerging from recession as the Preliminary (second look) Gross Domestic
Product for the third quarter grew by 0.2 percent (over the second quarter),
thanks to strong foreign demand. The second quarter was booked at a 0.2 percent
decline from the first quarter.
Before the market open today, Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending
November 8 are expected to have risen by 17,000, coming on the heels of the
prior week's 43,000 decline. The last report showed the 4-week average dropping
by some 10,000 to 380,000. The average has now held below the key 400,000 level
for five consecutive weeks. Also due out at 8:30 a.m., October Import Prices
are expected to have risen by 0.6 percent versus September's 0.5 percent
decline. I am not sure what impact crude prices will have on this figure. We
imported at record levels and the crude contract spiked during the month, but
strangely enough it closed out October pretty much where it started. Also at
8:30 a.m., September International Trade (seen at $40.5 billion, last $39.21
billion). This report will be interesting as the U.S. dollar took a huge and
sustained plunge throughout the entire month of September. If you are a
currency trader, you may want to tune in around 12:15 p.m. as Treasury Secretary
Snow addresses Tax Foundation's conference in Washington.
