MARKET OVERVIEW
Overseas markets are trading higher this morning. As of 7:43 a.m. Eastern
Time, 10 of the 15 foreign indices that we follow were in positive territory
with a cumulative average return of 0.189 percent. Trading in Asia finished
the session mixed, with the Nikkei edging roughly seven points higher while the
Hang Seng finished the day down seven points.
The May contract on sweet crude oil settled down $2.22 on Wednesday after the
Department of Energy (DOE) reported a 4.1-million barrel rise in crude supplies
for the latest week. Meanwhile, distillate supplies fell 2.8 million barrels
and gasoline supplies decreased 4.1 million barrels. The American Petroleum
Institute largely backed these figures, setting forth a gain in crude
inventories and a decline in distillate and gasoline inventories. However, an
explosion at BP's Texas refinery (the third-largest U.S. refinery) after the
close sent crude futures soaring more than one percent higher in after hours
trading. Last night's move higher in the oil pits has carried over into this
morning, as the May contract was last seen up 63 cents at $54.44 per barrel in
pre-market trading.

DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
The US Labor Department was back in action Wednesday, reporting the biggest
rise in consumer prices in four months -- 0.4% in February -- as higher energy
costs took their toll. Exclude energy and food costs and the core rate still
climbed 0.3% -- the most since September. On the month, energy prices jumped
2%, and are up 10.4% over the past 12 months. Gasoline prices edged up 3.2% in
February, resulting in a worrying 15% gain over the past year. Year-over-year,
consumer prices have risen 3%, while the core rate has climbed 2.4% -- the most
since August 2002. The Fed's assertion that "pressures on inflation have picked
up in recent months, and pricing power is more evident" gives the monetary
policy board good reason to continue with its "measured pace" of interest rate
increases. A Bloomberg panel of economists forecasts consumer prices to rise a
further 2.5% this year. February consumer prices also rose in Canada, climbing
0.4% on the month, and 2.1% from a year earlier, as the country was affected by
the same inflationary woes as Americans -- namely energy and gasoline prices.
The latter alone jumped 8.5% compared with February 2004. However, unlike their
American counterparts, the Bank of Canada isn't yet waging a battle against
inflation, as it's trying to stimulate a slowing economy whose export market
has suffered from the strong Canadian dollar. Economic growth rolled in at a
1.7% annualized rate during the fourth quarter -- the slowest pace in a decade.
In fact, the bank has kept the base interest rate at 2.5% since October 2004,
given that inflation is still comfortably around the 2% target rate.
