ACE*COMM Corporation (NASDAQ:ACEC)
today announced its participation in Project K-Nect, an unprecedented
educational initiative that combines public education systems with
technology and telecommunications innovators to deploy smart-phone
devices as supplemental educational tools.
Project K-Nect takes advantage of new Web 2.0 and social networking
technology to deliver supplemental education material and to facilitate
peer-to-peer interaction for selected ninth-grade students in North
Carolina. The project helps bridge the digital divide by placing
sophisticated tools and “always on”
broadband access with students that may otherwise be disconnected. The
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) along with
QUALCOMM through its Wireless ReachTM
initiative and Digital Millennial Consulting (DMC) are the core
development team for Project K-Nect. For this project, ACE*COMM’s
Parent Patrol®
managed mobility service provides the mobile access controls to address
educators’ and parents’
concerns about mobile phone use.
“ACE*COMM provides both industry-leading
technology to control mobile phones and the commitment to work in a team
dedicated to providing long lasting social benefits”
said Shawn Gross, managing director of DMC “We
felt that ACE*COMM offered an advanced solution unrivalled in the
industry and found that their research complemented many of our own
findings.”
“ACE*COMM is delighted to participate in such
a ground-breaking initiative,” said Jonjie
Sena, ACE*COMM director of product management. “Our
independent research has clearly exposed many conflicting positions on
the issue of children and mobile phones. Our findings related to
parental and business concerns are paralleled in the education sector.
ACE*COMM offers features that provide control of mobile phone access and
filter freely available content that has direct application across many
industries and market segments. We provide a simple and elegant solution
to the school environment for competing desires to communicate and at
the same time, prevent mobile access abuses like bullying, cheating and
stalking. We feel this technology addresses concerns, that are causing
school boards to ban mobile phones, in a much more flexible and
equitable manner.”
Parent Patrol from ACE*COMM helps parents and school administrators
balance access with safety. Parent Patrol is a policy enforcement tool
that lets authorized individuals personalize each child’s
phone use, independent of the handset choice, for voice, messaging,
video and data services. Delegated access management allows authorized
individuals to specify what times of day their kids can use their mobile
phones, when services like text messaging are not allowed, what mobile
Web content should be blocked and can even disable selected features on
a handset.

About Project K-Nect
Project K-Nect is designed to create a supplemental resource for at-risk
secondary students to focus on increasing their math skills through a
common and popular technology – mobile
smartphones. Ninth graders in several public schools in the State of
North Carolina will receive smartphones to access supplemental math
content aligned with their teachers’ lesson
plans and course objectives. Students also will have the opportunity to
communicate and collaborate with each other and access tutors outside of
the school day to help them master math skills and knowledge. The
smartphones and service will be free of charge to the students and their
schools due to a USD $1 million grant provided by QUALCOMM, as part of
its Wireless Reach™ initiative.
