SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Tech stocks claimed the high ground early Monday, and only added to their gains with bellwethers such as Apple Inc., Netflix Inc. and Yahoo Inc. rising on what was a relatively quiet day for the sector.
Apple (AAPL) rose 1.2% to close at $99.16, while Netflix (NFLX) added 1.5% to end the day at $466 a share and Yahoo (YHOO) climbed 2.5% to $37.38.
Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) ended the day up by almost 1% to close at $35.34 a share. The technology giant is scheduled to report its latest quarterly results after the close of trading Wednesday.
Google Inc. (GOOGL) rose 1.5% to $592.70. Over the weekend, the Internet kingpin acquired Jetpac, which makes an app that uses photos posted on Instagram to create recommendations for travelers. Jetpac said it would remove its apps from Apple's App Store and end support on Sept. 15.
Gains also came from Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), IBM Corp. (IBM), Facebook Inc. (FB) and Zynga Inc. (ZNGA).
