BRUSSELS--Telenet Group Holding NV (TNET.BT) named John Porter, 55, chief executive after Duco Sickinghe said Tuesday he is resigning from the role at the Flemish cable TV operator.
Mr. Sickinghe will be replaced by dual Australian-American citizen John Porter, who was chief executive of Austar United Communications Ltd., a leading provider of subscription television and related products in Australia, until May 2012.
"I love my job and enjoy working at Telenet," Mr. Sickinghe said in a statement. "In light of recent events, time has come for me to move on...I believe this to be in the best interest of Telenet and its future."
The move follows a protracted effort by billionaire telecommunications pioneer John Malone's Liberty Global Inc. (LBTYA) to raise its stake in Telenet. The stake currently amounts to around 58%, after some major investors declined Liberty Global's bid of 35 euros ($45.30) a share.
