                            PRE-CLOSE TRADING UPDATE

Wyevale Garden Centres plc, the UK's leading garden centre operator, reports on
its trading, prior to entering the close period, in respect of the 26 weeks to
29 June 2003.

Group sales increased by 8.6% and like for like sales by 2.0%. The weather
pattern was similar to last year with a good Spring followed by a wet May, a key
gardening month, and a hot, sunny June.

In March we introduced "10% Discount Tuesdays" for the over 60's and our
marketing campaign included a number of 10% discount weekends to combat
increasing competition and discounting from the DIY and supermarket operators.
These initiatives proved successful in maintaining market share.

The extra discount did not impact on gross margin which we expect to be similar
to last year's H1 with other income, overheads and stock in line with our
expectations.

Wyevale Garden Centres results for the 26 weeks ended 29 June 2003 are expected
to be announced on 9 September 2003.
