The following table lists unplanned and planned production outages at U.S. refineries as reported by Dow Jones Newswires. The information is compiled from both official and unofficial refining sources and doesn't purport to be a comprehensive list.
Most recently, Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) reported in a Thursday evening filing that a pump failure at its Baytown, Texas refinery resulted in a loss of cooling water supply resulting in the shut down of some units. Exxon said that production was not impacted and all customer needs were being met, according to the state environmental report.
A fire early Thursday at Lion Oil Company's El Dorado, Arkansas, oil refinery has reduced crude oil throughput to about 60% of capacity, company spokesman Wallace Moody said.
Repairs to electrical instrumentation and insulation damaged by the fire are underway; crude throughput is expected to return to normal rates by Saturday, he added.
The El Dorado refinery is able to process up to 70,000 barrels of crude oil a day and will be shutting down in September for 60-days of plant-wide turnaround maintenance, Moody said.
Total S.A. (TOT) restarted an unnamed unit at its Port Arthur, Texas Refinery, according to a report issued Monday.
Tesoro Corp. (TSO) said it expects its Kenai, Alaska and Martinez, Calif. refineries to be processing at normal capacity rates by the end of the week, a company spokesman said Monday.
On June 4, two units at the Alaska refinery were shut down because of a power failure. The refinery has a capacity to process up to 72,000 barrels a day.
In May, the hydrocracker and reformer at the Golden Eagle refinery in Martinez were shut down for planned maintenance. The refinery can process up to 166,000 barrels a day.
Exxon said a boiler unit at its Baytown, Texas, refinery hit a snag over the weekend but production has not been impacted.
On June 19, the refinery restarted one boiler unit only to have another trip off, a company spokeswoman said. The second boiler is being restarted, according to Neely Nelson. Both boilers are located at the refinery's fluid catalytic cracking unit #3.
On June 17, Exxon shut hydrocracking unit No. 1 at the Baytown refinery. It was not clear whether the outage was planned or unplanned, nor was the duration noted in the filing to Texas state regulators.
And a SCOT unit shut down for unknown reasons June 17 at Total Port Arthur. It is no clear when the unit will be restarted.
BP (BP) 16 shut a distillate desulfurization unit at its Whiting, Indiana, refinery due to a leak in an associated compressor. The outage is expected to be short-lived, and a restart was expected in 24-36 hours.
Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) said on June 15 that the restart of a crude unit, vacuum unit and coker at its Norco, La., refinery is a least three weeks away. The units were shut due to a minor fire on June 9.
Also on June 15, Valero said it would delay the plant-wide shutdown of its Aruba refinery to mid-July rather than early July. The process of shutting down the units will begin in early July.
