Two Opel plants in Germany will remain part of parent company Stellantis NV's local subsidiary Opel Automobile GmbH, union IG Metall said on Wednesday.
IG Metall said union representatives and the works council had agreed with Opel that splitting off the sites in Eisenach and Ruesselsheim was off the table, adding that Eisenach will remain a subsidiary of Opel Automobile GmbH as an independent unit.
Stellantis had said earlier this year that it was considering the legal split to make production more efficient and flexible.
"The separation and break-up of Opel was prevented and employment secured," said IG Metall's Joerg Koehlinger in a statement.
Stellantis confirmed the news in a separate release and said the plant in Eisenach will start up shifts in the first week of January with the production of the Opel Grandland model. It had said in September that it would temporarily pause production at the site due to the semiconductor shortage.
