Albertsons Brings 4th of July Closer to Home for Thousands of Deployed Americans 185 Computers Sent to Camp Anaconda Improves Troops' Access to Email BOISE, Idaho, June 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Albertson's, Inc. announced today that it is shipping 185 computers to Camp Anaconda in Central Iraq to connect family and friends with deployed loved ones in a contribution linked to celebration of 4th of July weekend. The donation comes in response to the US Army's concern that too few computers were available at Camp Anaconda, the main Army base camp in Iraq. This situation has resulting in limited Internet access and hundreds of troops in line, at any given time, waiting to communicate home. "I cannot even begin to express how much this project will mean to the soldiers of Camp Anaconda. In addition to bringing our troops closer to their families, this will also help other soldiers continue their education via distance learning," said First Sergeant Craig Haskell, 116th Engineer Co. CSE, UTARNG, Spanish Fork, Utah. Haskell said the computers will be used in the Soldiers' Education Center, at various soldier study centers, several different Internet Cafe sites, as well as augmenting battalion computer capability in peak periods. The computers were packed and loaded by Albertsons volunteers today along with 200 care packages for Albertsons associates who currently are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. "After learning that our troops in Iraq often waited hours in line to send email home to their loved ones, it became evident that we could make thousands of Americans' lives easier by simply providing these military personnel better access to email and the Internet," said Larry Johnston, chairman, CEO and president of Albertsons. "We are very proud of all of our military serving in the Middle East, particularly those who are Albertsons associates, and want them to know that we salute them and their families this Fourth of July holiday." CORUS, Albertsons' volunteer network, is made up of men individuals who donate their personal time each year to worthy non-business causes. Last year CORUS volunteers contributed over 750,000 hours of service in communities where they live and work. Winner of the White House Distinguished Home Front Award for support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve, Albertsons is one of the world's largest food and drug retailers. With annual revenues of over $35 billion, the Company is based in Boise, Idaho and employs more than 230,000 employees and operates over 2,500 retail stores in 37 states across the United States, under banners including Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Acme, Albertsons-Osco, Albertsons-Sav-on, Sav-on Drugs, Osco Drug, Super Saver, Shaw's and Star Market.
