Washington Gas Earns 7th Annual Building Safety Community Partnership Award from
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors
WASHINGTON, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors
today presented Washington Gas with its annual BuildingSafety Community
Partnership Award in recognition of the company's contribution to ensuring
building safety in Fairfax County, Va. The award is the first awarded to a
utility in Fairfax County.
"Washington Gas is honored to receive such an important award from Fairfax
County. It is a recognition of our dedicated employees who work hard each day to
deliver natural gas to our customers in a safe and reliable manner -- even in
difficult circumstances," said Tom Bonner, Washington Gas Vice President of Gas
Transportation.
The Board of Supervisors recognized Washington Gas for the diligent response to
an emergency caused by a landslide in June 2003 that threatened townhouses,
exposed natural gas and electric lines, damaged a retaining wall, and made the
community unsafe at the Landsdowne subdivision in Fairfax County.
Washington Gas worked quickly to make the situation safe and restore natural gas
service to affected homeowners. Company personnel installed a temporary pipeline
to continue delivering natural gas to the customers affected by the landslide
while repairs were made to the retaining wall. This allowed the residents to
avoid evacuating their homes.
After repairs were made to the retaining wall and county inspectors declared the
area safe, Washington Gas representatives returned to Landsdowne to participate
in community meetings with Fairfax County officials and respond to residents'
questions.
The award presentation took place during the Board of Supervisors' regularly
scheduled meeting on Monday, March 29, 2004. The Board of Supervisors presents
the award annually to an individual or corporate citizen for advancing building
safety in Fairfax County. The award presentation is part of the county's
recognition and participation in International Building Safety Week, which
begins April 5. The goal is to increase public awareness about building codes
and the role of code enforcement professionals.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Washington Gas delivers natural gas to
approximately 980,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers
throughout metropolitan Washington, D.C., and the surrounding region. Washington
