While there’s no free lunch, there is free
network management compliments of dopplerVUE and SYS Technologies
(AMEX:SYS), which released dVUE6 today, the sixth in its series of free
tools for network management professionals.
dVUEs are compact, graphical software gadgets that perform targeted
network and IT management functions right from the desktop. dVUE6, named “Lighthouse,”
provides network managers an early warning system of critical network
elements that are in or may be approaching troubled status. By
collecting syslog messages from network-connected devices, dVUE6’s
five rows of lights show the five network devices with the most syslog
alarms (color coded for severity), as well as the up/down availability
status of the device.
dVUE6 runs on any Microsoft desktop, either as a desktop utility or as a
Vista sidebar gadget. For more on syslog and using dVUE6, please see our NetTip.
Over 66,000 downloads of dVUEs 1 through 5 have been logged since the
series was debuted by SYS, whose heritage in network management includes
the development of NeuralStar, an enterprise platform used in some of
the world’s most advanced and secure networks,
such as DARPA, and its latest product, dopplerVUE, for small and medium
size companies.
SYS’ full dVUE lineup, all of which are free
and downloadable at www.dopplervue.com/,
include:
- dVUE1 – Web
Tender helps managers identify why users may experience website
performance issues
- dVUE2 – SpeedTrap
measures upload and download speeds
- dVUE3 – ServsUp
monitors local or remote servers
- dVUE4 – QueueVue
identifies mail queue bottlenecks in Microsoft Exchange servers
- dVUE5 – OID
Tracker collects and graphs any of hundreds of network device metrics
- dVUE6 – Lighthouse
uses syslog messages to identify potentially troubled network devices
Managers can use dVUEs to collect critical information about their
networks and devices, and also have their users place dVUEs on their
desktops to provide supporting information when reporting problems. For
example, if a user reports that a web site is performing slowly, the user’s
desktop dVUE can substantiate whether the issue is with the site serving
the web page, with a processor, or a connection problem on the user’s
own computer.
The popularity of dVUEs has soared since the introduction of dVUE1 in
July 2007, with actual downloads estimated at over 100,000 as new dVUEs
are picked up by and linked to other distribution sites.
dVUEs are part of SYS Technologies’ goal to
provide versatile and economical ways for managers to easily monitor and
understand their network and the experience of their users. dVUEs
operate independently from SYS Technologies’
new network management product, dopplerVUE, although future dVUEs will
have additional capabilities dopplerVUE users will be able to leverage.
dopplerVUE, which is being demonstrated at Interop
Las Vegas, April 28–May 1, 2008 (booth
#1877), is SYS Technologies’ new network
management solution that combines management and monitoring features
once available only in expensive enterprise solutions. Priced and
packaged for small and mid-sized organizations, dopplerVUE delivers
top-down visibility and self-aware monitoring that helps overburdened
management teams extend their reach and effectiveness. dopplerVUE fully
integrates fault and performance monitoring with discovery and automated
mapping in a single, unified dashboard across networked devices,
applications and services.
