Internap Network Services Corporation (AMEX:IIP), a
leading provider of performance-based routing solutions over the
Internet, today announced that Cyworld, a premier online social
networking platform, selected Internap as the exclusive provider of
premium Internet connectivity for its new U.S. site. Via service
through an Internap(R) Private Network Access Point (P-NAP(TM)) in
California, Cyworld gains a scalable, redundant, IP infrastructure
that is backed by a 100 percent uptime guarantee.
Operated by SK Communications, a subsidiary of SK Telecom,
Cyworld's online community revolves around reciprocal buddy
relationships through a free homepage service where people can enjoy
picture editing, hosting and sharing, an interactive sketchbook and
more as they express and journal their lives. Cyworld also allows
members to purchase digital items from an extensive catalog to
personalize their online experience.
Internap testing revealed that IP networks typically run 30
percent below optimum levels and periodically experience unexpected
latency, which results in a user experience that is slow and at times,
non-existent. Cyworld's customer-facing applications, such as
streaming media and photo sharing will be routed across the Internap
network to overcome the shortcomings of single network solutions. In
turn, Cyworld will be able to provide a consistent quality of service
as users browse and select from thousands of digital items in the
site's shop section.
"In the highly competitive U.S. social networking market, a
premium user experience is essential," said Henry E. Chon, CEO of
Cyworld USA. "Cyworld needed the most reliable, high-performance
connectivity available for our entry into North America, and Internap
provides the ideal platform for us to deliver applications that help
nurture offline relationships in an interactive space."
The Internap intelligent route control technology, a proprietary
component of the P-NAP architecture, effectively prepares Cyworld for
managing traffic spikes during significant events. Offered as a
managed service, Performance IP is proactively monitored by the
Internap Network Operations Center (NOC) at all times to ensure
optimal performance.
"More businesses have come to understand that simply increasing
bandwidth does not address performance issues on the Internet," said
James P. DeBlasio, chief executive officer of Internap. "Our
multi-network approach combined with our intelligent route control
provides the consistency and reliability that Internet-based companies
demand. We're pleased that Cyworld has entrusted Internap to manage
and optimize the IP for their U.S. launch."
