Enova Systems, Inc. (NYSE Alternext: ENA) (AIM: ENV) (AIM: ENVS), a production company in the emerging alternative energy industry and a leading developer of proprietary electric, hybrid and fuel cell digital power management systems, will showcase its unique technologies at the 2009 Plug-In Conference and Technology Exhibition at the Long Beach, CA Convention Center on August 10-13. The conference will highlight the latest technological advances, market research and policy initiatives shaping the future of plug-in hybrid and all-electric transportation.

Representatives of Enova’s executive management team and board of directors will be on hand to present Enova’s hybrid and all-electric drive technologies for commercial vehicles. Enova will be updating industry leaders and the media on its recent market initiatives. A centerpiece of the Enova presentation will be the Enova Ze, North America’s first all-electric walk in van. Navistar’s IC School Bus, powered by Enova’s post-transmission plug-in hybrid drive system, will also be on hand to transport conference attendees between venues.

The Enova Zē (short for zero-emissions) is a commercialized all electric step-van drive system, targeted at the delivery and service vehicle market and is available now for fleet operators to deploy on existing routes. Engineered specifically for urban delivery routes and service/maintenance operations, the Enova Zē plug-in step van drive system travels up to 150 miles per charge and can reach a top speed of 65 mph. Operating costs are projected to be $.08- $.10 per mile – significantly less than the average of $.24-$.48 per mile in a comparable diesel vehicle.

The recent introduction of the all-electric Ze drive system has captured the attention of some of the largest commercial OEMs and fleet operators in the world. The US Air Force has been evaluating the Ze Drive system for more than a year, with positive results.

Tom Quinn, the director for the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technology, recently stated, “The Enova Ze drive system has performed exceptionally well for the US Air Force. The support staff at Hickam Air Force Base have relied on the Ze to deliver outstanding service and quiet performance every day for more than a year. It certainly has become a valuable addition to their fleet.”

This unique technology has recently been demonstrated to USPS, Aramark, Amazon.com, UPS, the US Army, the Department of Energy, and several other national fleets and vehicle OEMs. The Ze drive system gives the user the real opportunity to readily deploy technology that will reduce fuel and maintenance costs by up to $15,000 annually, while cutting harmful emissions. In many cases, this technology qualifies for government electrification and recovery funds.

Enova’s versatile, non invasive and user friendly plug-in electric drive train systems have already been applied to more than 400 route delivery vehicles on a range of chassis platforms in Europe and the U.S. during the past three years. As a result of the expansion of its relationship with Smith Electric Vehicles, Enova’s 120kW all-electric drive systems were recently seen in Smith’s Newton delivery trucks that were deployed with AT&T, Frito Lay, Staples, Coca-Cola, Pacific Gas & Electric and Kansas City Power & Light.

The market for IC Bus’s hybrid electric school buses, featuring Enova’s post-transmission hybrid technology, continues to develop. The IC Bus hybrid school bus is cleaner, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 40%, nitrogen oxide by up to 20%, and particulate matter by as much as 30%, as well as improving fuel economy by up to 130% when using a diesel bus as the baseline. All of these statistics are the result of Independent third-party testing.

Recently, Enova and Navistar/IC Bus announced a US Department of Energy award under the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Technology Acceleration and Deployment Activity program for 60 PHEV school busses. Additional indications from IC Bus are positive as they gear up for a sustained market penetration initiative. As school districts, states, and countries tap into government electrification and recovery funds, Enova expects the market for these vehicles to expand rapidly.

Both Enova’s all electric and hybrid drive technology offer customers the ability to evaluate conversions and retrofits of current vehicles, to compliment new vehicle usage. The ability to address existing vehicle fleets allows Enova to penetrate a larger market, and return an immediate value to the end user. As we see vehicle service lengths extend due to budget constraints, converting to electric drives, or retrofitting to a post transmission hybrid system can provide the user with both a realistic economic payback over time, as well as with immediate maintenance and operating savings. Additionally, in retrofitting existing vehicles with Enova’s unique post-transmission hybrid drive technology, the operator doesn’t affect any software, warranty, or certification factors associated with the engine package.
