The biggest winning trades of all time

6. Andy Krieger

A currency trader with Bankers Trust, Andy Krieger was another to profit big from Black Monday (well the aftermath).

Following the events of October 19, 1987 investors and companies moved out of US dollars and into other currencies, which hadn’t been as adversely affected on Black Monday. As a result, Krieger believed that some currencies would become overvalued.

He turned his attention to the New Zealand dollar (the Kiwi) thinking it looked vulnerable. With huge leverage, he took up a massive short position. A position so large, it is believed to have exceeded New Zealand’s money supply. The Kiwi capitulated, falling 5% against the dollar in a matter of hours. He made a $300 million profit.
