Good prospects for recovery with the chance of a bid has been my view for a while now :)

A ‘blue-sky̵7; Whitbread could hit £80, says Shore

Shore Capital believes Whitbread (WTB) shares could more than double as the Premier Inn owner continues to build momentum.

Analyst Greg Johnson retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and a ‘fair value’ target price of £44 on the company whose strong trading statement earlier this month showed a 14.9% rise in like-for-like group sales over pre-Covid levels.

Johnson increased his full-year 2023 profit before tax estimate by £47m to £391m after Whitbread’s ‘excellent third quarter’. The shares have advanced over 14% to £30.65 in the New Year rally but are up just 2% in the past year.

‘With booking trends strong, and several ongoing supportive factors, we see our assumptions of a modest decline in profitability next year as conservatively set,’ he said.

‘We see the higher profit base and continued momentum increasing pressure for enhanced shareholder returns – £1bn over the next three years – while underpinning our property valuation argument.’

Johnson said while the ‘fair value’ is set at £44, the group could achieve a ‘blue-sky valuation of over £80 per share on a fully built-out UK and Germany’.

So, in summary, one bank thinks WTB is going up, one thinks it is going down and another thinks it will stand still. I predict that one of them will be right!! Honestly, brokers are worse than useless.

Yes that crossed my mind as well!
Anyway the new guy should correspond with a change in fortunes as we enter recovery. On the plus side re the Costa sale that opens up the possibility of a bid for the company but hopefully not just yet as I'm expecting this to further motor upwards as the recovery continues. Imho nai!

No mention of it blowing half of the Costa proceeds on a share buyback at almost £50/share then?

Sale of Costa in August 2019, £3.9 billion, pre Covid pandemic, and recession re Ukraine war, has allowed time to buy cheap properies and develop the business to create the attractive structural growth opportunities for its leading hotel business, Premier Inn, in the UK and Germany.
'
Sold Costa at probable peak and added to Premier Inn on the cheap before an emerging market bounce ???

Yes PI hotels have been heavily booked even at the higher prices which still represent good value compared to the competition. This recovery in the share price is long overdue, plenty of catching up to do yet! Imho

Agreed.

Strong trading momentum continued with total UK accommodation sales up 25% versus FY22 and up 36% versus FY20, representing a 26.3pp outperformance of the M&E market(3).

Also a very strong performance in Germany.

Should move from strength to strength now as Dominic from Domino's takes over as CEO!
