Derren Nathan, Head of Equity Research at Hargreaves Lansdown, said:“It’s no surprise that costs are going up, but Whitbread’s strong balance sheet is providing some mitigation, with interest income on its cash assets providing something of a buffer.

“Strong momentum in UK hotel bookings has continued into the third quarter and Whitbread is better placed than many of its peers. It won’t be immune to a prolonged downturn but we think it has the resilience to come out the other side.”

i thought that was a very good update, nothing new on costs, that's well known, but they're doing far better numbers with PI. they clearly have very good trading momentum that other sectors like pubs / casual dining have really struggled to achieve. the thing that I don't like is the steadily decreasing freehold percentage / weakening balance sheet.

Interesting, Whitbread will be taken over at some point imho especially now that Costa is not part of the brand, it's just a question of when! Sooner rather than later would probably equate to cheaper.

really sucks to be in finance media today: if an article takes more than 5 minutes to write it will be wrong and irrelevant by the time it's published

Looks like Tories have finally blown up the U.K., almost did it with brexit but have pulled it off this time. Guessing government will fail shortly and general election. Shocking.

they're 'doing very well operationally, sales well ahead of pre pandemic. PI is not very cyclical, profits only declined by about 3% in the great financial crisis before bouncing back even stronger - much of their custom is essential and non discretionary. then there's about £6bn of property on the balance sheet, with net cash. it's got a competitive advantage over the smaller competition - the direct booking model, and is much stronger and better capitalised than their main competitor travelodge, as well as enjoying lower rents as a result of the stronger covenant. i think they are difficult to compete with, far more difficult than is probably understood by mr market anyway.

Not much of a cut and still way above the current price. They may as well have just left it unchanged 😉
