91% take-up..

Whitbread said JP Morgan Cazenove and Morgan Stanley, who are acting as joint global coordinators, will "use reasonable endeavours" to acquire the remaining 5.8 million shares. They will acquire the shares should no takers be found.

Bought back in this morning, it's looking as if this may be back to some kind of new normality sooner than I had thought as with JDW and IAG.

Boris now appears desperate not to deprive the UK economy of the summer trading season across the travel and hospitality centre and some companies will be more prepared than others.

Still a bit of squabbling about quarantine measures across the board but I think a compromise between Government and industry will be the outcome. Just my opinion, dyor.

Friday morning..

Citi said in a note that Whitbread’s competitive position in the branded UK budget hotel market is to improve significantly post Covid-19, as leasehold model competitors and independent hoteliers will experience far greater operational deleverage from poor trading. It estimated that Whitbread will have £2.7bn of liquidity at end of the first half of 2021.

"The rights issue was not required for immediate liquidity, but it should ensure WTB comes through Covid-19 with the balance sheet strength to enhance its competitive position," it said.

Young's just announced pub re opine plan. So my thoughts are having been a retail operations manager in the past is that staff need at least 4 weeks rota in advance. The company's will need a week or less to plan their rota. They will then use the interim period to prepare and order in beer and food etc and make any hygiene preparations. So my bet is that if others follow Young's suit or very close then we should be expecting an update any time soon. The blueprint for Pubs opening must be happening. Imho

Screaming sell, 18 quid by aug, who’s going to be holidaying in covid capital of Europe U.K.?? Probably one of the most inept managements in the ftse 350 and that is saying something as it’s the poorest major index by a mile, blown the coke money with buy backs at stupidly high prices and then do a rights issue, just stunningly awful. Toast.

If the new shares are not taken up, does that mean that on the 10th June the share price is likely to increase. For example if it was at £21 it would return to about £25?

Travelodge are pleading insolvency and proposing a CVA. Only two years ago they were talking about a sale at circa £1billion. Implied premium of £2m per hotel. Now many of the hotel freeholders would jump at the chance to move away at nil premium to a solvent operator. Given that the hotels generate a profit of 20/25% in normal times this is an exceptional opportunity for Whitbread.

Is rights issue worth taking up?

If you think the WTB shares are worth buying here then the rights are worth taking up.

If you don't think the WTB shares are worth buying here then perhaps consider selling your WTBN rights instead of taking them up?

I keep saying rights issues are a smoke & mirrors con IMO. Existing 'loyal' holders are blagged into thinking they're being offered some special deal. Of course, they're not, and the total cost to them of taking up the rights is the much same as for anyone else buying shares.
