Market report:

Whitbread shares rose 2.9 per cent, or 138p, to 4901p after it said it could afford to give around £2.5billion back to investors following the £3.9billion sale of Costa Coffee.

Ahead of its capital markets meetings, broker Liberum was seeking more clarity following the Costa disposal.

Some in the Square Mile think Whitbread, which also owns the Beefeater and Brewers Fayre pub-restaurants, is a prime takeover target, with Intercontinental Hotels Group and Marriott International tipped as potential bidders.

It seems to me that: a fair number of shareholders being in your camp Jeffian (and, by the way, you can count me in) + stingy tender offer terms = unhappy shareholders = more chance of an early takeover. Maybe an over-simplification on my part, but I leave the complicated stuff to the BREXIT politicians!

So the question now is at what price will the tender offer be set? More than likely it will be based on some sort of average price over a defined period.

I hate share buybacks, particularly when they are termed "returning cash to shareholders" (Translation: returning cash to ex-shareholders).

It is mainly on Premier Inn - the future. It has started and looks as if it will be a long one and you can watch here:

Details on return of proceeds from Costa are the last item but looking at the slides it consists of £500m market buyback (started) and a £2bn tender offer (June).

Unless it's bid for, would be pretty sure you will get an opportunity
to buy back for less. There is a strong cyclical element to Premier,
and a reduction in EU labour may be a headwind. Very much a case of IMV only.
High quality business though to be fair.

Sold out late Dec. to protect capital but wish I'd stayed now! Anyway I made a decent profit considering my original investment was when I started this thread so I shouldn't complain!

Surprised no comment here much after a good share price reaction recently. Nobody into this? Too sensible a share for the bb's!

Ex Costa you are left with Premier Inn which I suspect will be taken out pronto thus effecting a complete trasfer of Whitbread's assets at very fancy multiples, the likes of which we would not have been likely to see in the previous structure.

Yes, but I think that the point being made is that anyone who bought when AB took over would not be at all happy. If you bought when I started this thread and sold when AB took over that would have been a great investment return. The counter argument would be that the previous CEO may have chosen to retire when the future began to look less favourable.

"What a dire investment these have been"

That rather depends when you bought them!
