British pub group JD Wetherspoon has put its longer-term Irish expansion and investment plans on hold until there is more clarity over how the bar trade can function within the Government’s Covid-19 guidelines.

Porsche924, I think that leaving the EU with or without a deal should not be judged by some potential short term turbulence. It's the long run that will test if the majority were correct in their decision.

So glad to see the company of that pro brexit scumbag getting hammered, just wait for a cretinous hard brexit from wheezing boris to really finish the country off. Self harming peasants.

'Big Tim' was on Radio 4 this morning saying we should adopt the Swedish way of dealing with Covid 19.

Maybe 'Spoons' should go on an overseas expansion - they could start in Sweden. That should make the Profit and Loss account even more 'interesting'!

As to shorting 'Spoons' you might be correct in the short term. In the long pull these fellows will be the winners.

MAB in an even bigger pickle, their debt around £2/3 billion, backed up by assets, but depreciation will be big!

JDW have access to financial markets to raise cash, so any talk of going bust
needs to be viewed in this context. Yes listed companies can go under,
but I would put that theoretical risk at well under 5% here.

This will be a cracking recovery play at some point, IF you can get your timing
anywhere near right.

Current extraordinary circumstances are taking out swathes of competition.

Longer term that is highly supportive.

Good interview on Radio 4 this morning with 'Big Tim'.

He was expounding the Swedish way of dealing with the virus.

Perhaps 'Spoons' should consider an overseas expansion into Sweden. That would certainly put a further dent in the profit and loss account!

Aside from Tim’s rant, the results themselves were predictably terrible, with like for like sales 29.5% down on the prior year and a statutory pre-tax loss of £105m after plenty of exceptional costs.

Investor's Champion comments that IFRS 16 complicates the picture further and they would urge readers to focus on the cash flow statement to get a better picture of what has really been going on. More on the Investor's Champion website.

ARJA, you might get them through IG on a CFD - i tried 3 "sell to open" trades today with IG on SB, got knocked back on all of them. all minows, but all have been consecutive day risers, UFO 6 days on the up, 257% - got to be profit taking kicking in there soon, but can't get a trade.
