I heard that its not the headline grabbing covid rule breaking things that are the problem but the small things we do every day .Millions of actions thats why the hands face space is the message to follow. My mate will be breaking the rules Thurs if he travels to Leamington spar from Rochdale to stay at his sons .He already has tickets and unless they are policing the trains he will go even though he complains about others .Until people think more of others it will continue .There was an id1ot in the queue for wetherspoons last night singing virtually in our face .One good sign for wetherspoons was that it was difficult to get in the only pub with queues .

I keep waiting my idea is they will be stronger long-term but I won't buy at the moment as I'm sure these closures will be all over shortly. The markets don't always behave in rational ways .

Tim, re the SP, the rational may be... further lockdowns means more permanent clousers, leaving
JDW in a stronger position longer term. Personally I would not buy atm,
but may be misreading it.

In all honesty am amazed shares are doing this well.If Boris does shut most pubs in the north will not be a popular move as the science does not back him up when it's blatantly obvious that's most of the infectious are coming from the university's and halls of residence and only a very small amount from pubs.

Little to cheer about as JD Wetherspoon poised to report losses

Pubs giant JD Wetherspoon is likely to have little to cheer about this week with analysts forecasting annual losses amid the pandemic gloom.

The “Baum” used to be a great pub, not far up the hill behind the cinema. Is it still there.

Yes glenowen the Regal moon .I must admit its not the greatest in there .Huddersfield Ashton under lyne are very good .Obviously the value for money is excellent but there's other places similar like Yates. There are some expensive places in rochdale I ordered 2 pints of something we hadn't heard of for 12 pound .A new bar called the medicine tap .I needed medicine for the shock of the bill lol..

Hi Gozzie, yes, I suppose it largely depends on the quality of local management. I used to live in Rochdale - isnt the JDW where the old ABC cinema used to be? You used to be able to go there for just £1 in the 80s/90s - so the "value for money" principle is being maintained at the venue at least!

Just for a change on this forum, some specific comment on JDW and its prospects as a business.

I visited my local Wetherspoon for lunch today and was very impressed:

1. Member of staff at the door to ensure that all customers were either registering their visit on the NHS Track and Trace app, or filling in contact details on a form.

2. All staff were wearing masks and tables seemed to be getting cleaned after customers left. Lots of protective screens around the pub.

3. Ordered on the app and food and drink arrived quickly. The food was very good quality, yet again. While a lot of people seem to complain about the quality of JDW food, I have rarely had cause for complaint over the years.

4. The cost - inclusive of free coffee refills - was ridiculously good value. They still have a 50% discount, Monday’s to Wednesdays, and that is an absolute give-away.

5. Staff who served me was helpful and courteous. I think she was smiling but couldn’t confirm, due to the mask!

As a shareholder, I did sell some JDW earlier in the Covid period - just to protect against the potential downside of an indiscriminate collapse in the market. However, on the strength of today’s experience and numerous other “research̶1; forays - I do pay attention to the financials too - I think that JDW will definitely be a “survivor̶1; and should prosper, long-term. The quality of the company’s business offering and its customer service levels are better that rival companies, in my opinion.

Of course, if Covid-induced economic Armageddon is upon us, JDW will have no chance - just like the rest of us.

And people are taking this seriously lol .A widely-circulated open letter calling on governments to pursue herd immunity is counting homeopaths, therapists and fake names among its "medical" signatories, leading to accusations that it falsely represents scientific support for the controversial position. The Great Barrington Declaration, a letter organised by prominent advocates of herd immunity, claims to have been signed by more than 15,000 scientists and medical practitioners, as well as more than 150,000 members of the general public.Yet Sky News found dozens of fake names on the list of medical signatories, which anyone can add to if they tick a box and enter a name. These included Dr. I.P. Freely, Dr. Person Fakename and Dr. Johnny Bananas, who listed himself as a "Dr of Hard Sums".One medical professional on the list gives his name as Dr Harold Shipman, a general practitioner in the United Kingdom.Other famous names included Dominic Cummings, who is described as "PhD Durham Univercity".Sky News also found 18 self-declared homeopaths listed on the open letter as medical practitioners, despite the fact that homeopathy has no scientific underpinning or clinical evidence to support its use.In addition, the letter has been signed by well over 100 therapists, including massage therapists, hypnotherapists, psychotherapists and one Mongolian Khöömii Singer who describes himself as a "therapeutic sound practitioner".Public health experts accused the letter, which has been used as evidence for the idea of a rift in the scientific community, of misrepresenting the level of support for the controversial concept of herd immunity.Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said it reminded him of "the messaging used to undermine public health policies on harmful substances, such as tobacco".As advocates of herd immunity have become more vocal, media reports have described scientists as "divided".Yet although herd immunity has some prominent backers, and the Great Barrington Declaration has been signed by many respected scientists and medical professionals, the vast majority of specialists in the field reject the approach.Professor McKee added: "Leaving aside the powerful arguments against this declaration on grounds of science and feasibility, we have consistent evidence that a clear majority of the British public support necessary measures to reduce the spread of the virus or would go even further."Yet the campaign behind this declaration promotes a completely different picture."The letter, called the Great Barrington Declaration after the United States town where it was written, was initiated by Professor Martin Kulldorff, Professor Jay Bhattacharya and Professor Sunetra Gupta. It calls on governments to allow younger and less vulnerable people to catch coronavirus, thereby encouraging "herd immunity" among the population, while people who would be hit especially hard by the virus are given "focused protection".

Gozzie, it's rife in the north east, another 2 friends today tested positive - 1600 students at Newcastle Uni tested positive yesterday on top on the 770 who tested positive at Northumbria Uni - spoke to a friend down in Gloucester yesterday, she works on the ITU ward - she said that things were pretty normal at her hospital, no great rise in c19 patients, however she went on to say, Bromsgrove Hospital are almost at capacity.

not sure what numbers are being admitted to hospitals in the NE, but will find out this weekend from a friend who works in ITU at the RVI in Newcastle.

hope you all have a great weekend, could be the last before the next lockdown....

The Tory Party continue to rebuild Communist China with tax free imports from China?

Instead of Punishing Communist China for the cost of their virus It will be the ordinary UK man and woman in the street that will pay the price with Rishi Sunak Tax increases in the Next budget...What UK export to China is a pittance in comparison.

Could have recovered the cost of the China Virus with import tax

Reacting to warnings that hospitals in the North could run out of coronavirus beds within a week, Sir Jeremy wrote on Twitter: "The tragedy is how predictable this has been since at least early July. It was not inevitable.
