The FTSE 100 has lurched heavily into the red, dragged down by a major sell-off in the commodities sector as metal prices tumbled.

The UK blue-chip index fell 113 points, or 1.5%, to 7,497, with shares in miners sold off heavily.

Metals came under pressure from renewed strength in the dollar, in which they are priced, which rose to its highest level against a global basket of currencies in more than a year.

Miners littered the bottom of the FTSE 100

Goldmans..

The sell-off in Chinese equities has continued today (CSI SSE index are down by c.2%) even as the PBOC conducted 383b yuan of MLF (1y, 3.3%), 46.5b yuan more than the expiring 336.5b yuan - a dovish sign.

Despite the continued dovish signs from the policymakers, the commods miners have remained in the penalty box as the market remains concerned about: a) the ongoing EM growth concerns and b) the continued decline in yuan. Until this is resolved, we believe that investors are likely to remain cautious on the commodities / miners.

From ANTO half-year results...

Looking at the worldwide copper market, Antofagasta said the outlook is "favourable" in the mid to longer term as demand is expected to grow while supply growth is constrained.

However, it did caution on the shorter term, saying there is "considerable" market uncertainty due to ongoing international trade disputes.

Investors Chronicle:

IC View

Weir is delivering on its strategy with the precision you would hope from an engineer, but as so frequently the case in recent years, the shares are hardly short of fans. Then again, a recent pull-back looks like an opening, ahead of a first contribution from ESCO. With an enterprise value to cash profits multiple of 11 well below the two-year average, we move to buy.

Midday market report...

Weir Group missed analysts' forecasts for the front half of the year as capacity overhangs continued to weigh on its pricing power in the Oil&Gas market. For the six months ending on 30 June, the oil and mining equipment manufacturer posted a 38% jump in profits before tax to £143m on a continuing basis, which was shy of the £148m which analysts at Numis had penciled in.

Topline growth meanwhile was 15%, for sales of £1.062bn or 23% on a constant currency basis.

Hmm.

I like this company. Currently no position but wondering what's going on today.

I'll be watching waiting to see if it goes lower.

big drop I wonder if people think Weir are subject to trumps customs levy, their pumps use steel I suppose. Get caught either way whether steel comes from UK or is sourced in States (steel up 40% due to import tarrifs).

With shale oil booming can't see dip lasting long.

I have sold this morning. It's had a good run and I don't think oil is going much higher and additionally I think the pound may strengthen over the coming months.

Interim statement on the 31st so may continue rising into that.

It seems as if Weir waste has had a good contract with Birmingham City Council to clear some of the rubbish in Birmingham consequent to the long term strike of the normal city rubbish collectors

Share price keeps sliding regrettably, which is surprising given that oil is going up and the dollar falling.

I see it's currently down again. Hoping US Crude can get through $50 today. maybe that will help
