Labcold is a UK manufacturer of medical and scientific refrigeration. A key supplier to the NHS, British Army, laboratories and health centres

History
Labcold was founded in 1932, based in Borough High Street, London and long retained a link to its origins in its original name: Boro Laboratories or Boro Labs for short. Originally the primary business was to provide a laboratory analytical service, however it was not long before the company became involved in the supply of equipment. In the following years the company closed the analytical laboratory to further develop its business and to focus on supplying specialist laboratory temperature control equipment for the medical, food, pharmaceutical and other life science related applications.
In 2007 Borolabs was renamed Labcold, which had previously been the brand name used for their own brand range of refrigerators and freezers and to coincide with the company's 75th Anniversary.
The Products
Today, Labcold is established as the largest specialist manufacturer and supplier of medical and laboratory refrigerators and freezers in the UK. Labcold refrigerators and freezers developed a reputation with large corporate and medical establishments as being safe, secure and reliable through its quality construction and performance with appropriate safety and monitoring facilities. Labcold British Standard blood bank refrigerators are now the UK market leader, complemented by a variety of other temperature related products for a blood transfusion department use. Following on from this success a range of laboratory incubators was developed featuring models designed and manufactured to suit a wide variety of applications. To compliment these products Labcold has developed a range of temperature monitoring and alarm products that keep a constant check on routine equipment operations for confirmation of sample security. All Labcold products are CE marked to confirm they comply with current EC safety and other directives. ...

Vindon News - AAPS Conference & Exhibition 2012

Vindon Scientific recently returned from AAPS 2012 which proved to be an ideal opportunity to meet up with US clients both old and new. The walk in room we had on display proved to be of great interest allowing us to discuss the many advantages of Vindon equipment and also launch our new Smart Controller. In addition, as Vindon are in the process of developing new business partnerships to increase the awareness and reach of both Vindon's products and services, AAPS allowed us to meet up with some of our potential partners in the USA.
Vindon are well known in the UK for stability storage services and equipment, AAPS gave us the opportunity to let buyers in the USA know more about our product advantages. The new cost effective walk in room we had on display whilst still offering our superior technology and quality is now available in a range of materials to preserve our competitive edge. And the new Smart Controller, available as standard from 2013, will add many advantages with it's Duel Core Atom Intel processor, wireless access and monitoring, multi user security and USB compatibility.
Thank you all who showed your support at AAPS 2012 and we look forward to seeing you again at AAPS 2013, booth 1414.

Vindon eyes second American base for group growth
Last updated: 16th Aug 2012 at 08:39am
Pharmaceutical plc Vindon Healthcare is on course to open a second base in the US as the country remains a key target for the Rochdale company.
Chairman Liam Ferguson told Insider the market for its products was ten times greater in the US than at home and it had no plans to expand operations in the UK.
Vindon Healthcare, based on Kingsway Business Park, manufactures environmental control products for the pharmaceutical industry, life sciences and food sectors and operates storage facilities for pharmaceutical clients in Rochdale and Ireland.
In January 2010, it acquired Westech Instruments in Atlanta and subsequently launched its inaugural US base in the city 15 months ago.
"I would like think we could speed up the winning of business there...it's a large market and we cannot afford to drag our feet if we want to win business," he told Insider.
"If we are going to grow this group, it has got to be in America. It's a market we have to get a stake into.
"We are looking at other areas to base a strategic facility, probably along the west coast or in New York, but we are not doing it on a wing and prayer.
"We would only open a facility on the back of a client win and the most logical place would be in New Jersey or California. I would expect to open something new within the next 12 months.
"It's pretty obvious that is the place to expand but growing in America is easier said than done. It's more captive than the UK but there are barriers to entry."
Ferguson's comments came as the company posted a six per cent rise in half-year revenues, from £3.12m to £3.31m, but saw profits fall for the first six months of the year.
He added that Vindon was on course for 2012 revenue of £7.2m, up from its 2011 sales of £6.83m.
Ferguson said the company had not reached capacity in the UK so was not therefore looking to expand its base in Rochdale or boost its payroll, which stands at 60 across the group.
"A lot will depend on whether the drug companies will revive their outsourcing policies as many have stopped doing that and taken storage in-house. If a few of the big ones change their policies, then there could be a lot of work for us," he added.

Vindon Scientific's new digital systems put you in complete control
AAPS
October 09, 2012
Vindon Scientific's ongoing program of development and improvement to our controlled environment storage facilities and equipment means that Vindon systems include an interactive digital control system with a touch screen panel, designed to keep you fully informed at every stage of the storage process.
Vindon's new user-friendly Windows application, monitors and controls environment data for all Vindon stability storage cabinets, chambers, walk-in rooms and reach-in rooms.
Powered by a powerful CPU, the system delivers effective operational processing for temperature and humidity control and monitoring, as well as providing data to a visual interface.
The logic built within the application software is capable of interpreting data from sensors within any particular stability chamber. It will also make corrections to the hardware controlling the environment. Alarms are incorporated if the temperature or humidity fluctuates outside the given parameters. In addition service calibration and validation periods can be programmed into the system.
The system can also store all environment settings locally in an SQL database, which can be encrypted for additional security and made tamper-proof if required.
Vindon Scientific's range of stability storage cabinets, chambers, walk-in rooms and reach-in rooms are available at a variety of sizes and are designed to work at a wide range of temperatures from -20ºC to +60ºC and humidity up to 95%RH. Vindon's controlled environment storage suites in the UK, Ireland and the USA, provide Pharma Storage at ICH and Unique conditions and Biological Storage at -80ºC Ultra Low and Cryogenic temperatures to clients around the world.
Visit Vindon at AAPS in Chicago, Oct 14th – 18th - Booth 1024. On display will be a Vindon walk in room, a reach in chamber - as well as the new smart controller Place an order at AAPS – we'll give you a Google Nexus 7" tablet.

Considerations for Outsourcing of Stability Storage
Sep 19, 2012
Equipment and Processing Report
Q. Our company needs more stability storage. What issues should we consider when deciding whether to build our own biorepository facility or outsource our storage?
A. One question to consider is if you have the location and facility space needed. By its nature, any biorepository facility needs a large investment in tailor-built premises. Floor space comes at a premium and much of the equipment needed has a large footprint, because it may have to be capable of accommodating bulk products. Typically, you should be looking for a resource with several million cubic liters of environmentally controlled storage space and storage suites that can house thousands of cubic meters of product. Geographic location should also be considered. The location should be well away from natural disaster areas and in a convenient location for shipping options. Proximity to motorways and airports can be a distinct advantage, particularly considering the speed at which new global markets are opening up.
You should also consider the capital investment needed. An average-sized storage room could cost anywhere between $63,000 to $188,000 to set up. A typical cabinet could cost upwards of $23,500. With separate rooms needed to suit different environmental conditions, costs can quickly mount up. Cabinets and chambers in a walk-in stability room should always be available, with additional chambers to be called upon for specific requirements such as retained samples, secondary storage, storage of quarantine samples, freeze and thaw testing, and aerosol testing.

In a world's first - Adult stem cells restores feeling in paralysed patients.
4th September 2012
New hope was raised yesterday for people left paralysed by injury, after doctors said they had succeeded in using stem cells to restore feeling in two patients.
In a world first, doctors at Zurich University said two out of three men who had agreed to take part in an early trial, had regained some sensation below the level of their injuries.
It is the first time anyone has reported a positive outcome from stem cell therapy for severe spinal cord injury - and holds out the possibility of greater things in years to come.
The ultimate aim is to help those paralysed by injury to walk again.
Stem cells are special cells that can turn themselves into almost any kind of cell in the body. Those from human embryos have that absolute ability, while 'adult' stem cells have already specialised to a degree. For instance, neural stem cells can specialise into different type of nerve cells, but not something else like muscle or blood cells. .... ....

Well, I was expecting better results !!
The market as well it would seem.

On reflection they are not so bad
Holding up well against manufacturing
competition ... IMHO

Future prospects
In common with many companies the Group has experienced a decline in the demand for manufactured goods in the first half of 2012. We believe we have made the necessary changes to maintain and improve profitability through increased volumes and cost reduction programmes.
We anticipate the strong performance of our storage business will continue. The contractual commitments made by customers on storage and service contracts in the UK, Ireland and USA give us good visibility of future income. As at 30 June 2012 contracted future income amounted to £4.4m (£4.2m at 30 June 2011).
The steps taken to bolster the profitability of our core business are being supplemented by the development of new products and services and an ongoing search for suitable acquisitions.
Despite difficult market conditions, I am confident the quality of our product and service offering, combined with our strong balance sheet, will enable us to both mitigate those conditions and continue to grow profitably.
